Very good, great passer, steady, always pretty calm. Pretty much like you see him on the sidelines. Always liked him.

1982 was his best season statistically. However 1981 was his best season victory-wise.

won the Independence Bowl in 81 and had a nice win in Lubbock too.

had a rough time vs. SMU, Arkansas, and t.u. in those years

He was also a very reliable backup for Elway in Denver. When Elway went down he generally held his own.

Personally, I thought his greatness was that he held a clipboard and made $700,000 per year as Elway's backup. As he ages, he won't have to worry about the concussions and other stuff that NFL veterans have to deal with.

He was so solid, my focus would always be on the receivers just after the snap, to see if anyone was getting separation. When someone would break open, I knew the ball would be coming his way. He didn't necessarily throw lazers or a deep ball that would wow you, but his decision making and vision were definitely superior to most QB's.

"Seeing" the field like that usually translates well to coaching the field later.

Not much of a runner, but did "ok". We just weren't very good overall when he was here.

Kubiak was a pretty good QB without a real good surrounding cast. A buddy of mine that played defense at another SWC school that was a high NFL draft pick told me Kubiak had the reputation as that of a good, smart player

Coach Jackie Sherrill called Kubiak "the best I've seen as far as his knowledge of option and his footwork," and for good reason. As a junior, against Rice, Kubiak hit 18/25 passes and threw for six touchdowns. His success continued his senior season, in the spring of 1982, when Kubiak finished 12/18 and 20/32 in the final two scrimmages. He finished his college career with a selection to the All-Southwest Conference team in, after leading the conference in touchdowns and passing yards.

he played with an NFL backfield:

Johnny Hector
Earnest Jackson
Thomas Sanders

the o-line was the primary issue

Better question: Is Murray or Bucky number 2 behind, Johnny

I think he broke his leg in that game. Anyway, season ending injury.

That '82 season came in with high hopes, but was a real disaster. Defenses finished last in the SWC in rush, pass and total. That's not easy to do.

Three years later we first in rush, pass, and total defense.

The other interesting thing is that Jackie's two best classes, were after two disappointing seasons (5-6 & 5-5-1).
So much for having to win before you can recruit.

Live that he is going to the Super Bowl with the same staff that the haters in Houston ran out of town.

Pretty much covered on here - except for doofuses dogging him. Knew him and lots of his friends at St Pius. Even in high school - he was insistent all he ever wanted to do was be a coach. All of the other stuff was kind of gravy - NFL. Was always decent physically but separated himself from others due to the mental approach he had. Very heady and steady player. Lot of people said he Was probably as good or better at basketball in high school - shooting guard. I would say he is a success and represents the Aggie spirit pretty well. Whoop!!

1) you are an idiot, as evident in your previous post.
2) Tannehill belongs in the list.

His nickname at A&M was "Gare", not "Kubes".

Lots of mention of Murray and Bucky ranking next behind Johnny, but no mention of these guys:

Edd Hargett - 1967 SWC championship and Cotton Bowl victory over Bear Bryant's Alabama team led by Ken Stabler. Hargett obliterated all Aggie passing and total offense records up until that time.

Roddy Osborne - Bryant's QB his last two years, he led A&M to a SWC title, undefeated season, and #5 ranking in 1956, and to A&M's last #1 ranking during the 1957 season. He also led the 1956 team in both rushing and passing, a feat that remained unequaled until Manziel did it both of his seasons.

Jerrod Johnson - until he was injured he was the best passer A&M had since Murray. He never a great team around him.

Was at that game. ****erson had two 80 yard TDs. Other than that, we shut him down. Ha! Saw him and Craig James at a party after the game. The street around that frat house looked like a Porsche dealership. We were clearly the low bid if we only bought ED a Firebird.

I wondered if maybe Kubes was dead when he broke his leg. Never seen anyone lay that flat with a leg injury. I'm not criticizing, just observing.

Good old days ... when we were mediocre without any help from TexAgs.

Staff: We can't type Eric ****erson's name without getting letters edited out? Really? That name is engraved under a bust in Canton. C'mon, man! Makes me second guess my idea to start a thread about **** Butkus. Respectfully and stuff ...

Kubiak has always been a class act and great Aggie. Glad he and Von are in the super bowl!!

I was in the press box that day between the broadcasting crew and the Aggie coaches. It took so long to find out what was wrong with him that Verne Lundquist leaned around the glass and asked us to ask the coaches if he was ok. That whole game was bad, and on TV, too. And yes, Jackie gave Bobby Collins a couple of encouraging words after the game...
