been following this sport a long time and recruiting rankings just don't get me all worked up like it does some others. 5-Stars give you the Murrays and Swoopes, and Johnny came out of the three-star ranks.

Zactly. Bama is one of those rare birds that can get whoever they want and can actually get 4 and 5-star smart, dedicated recruits that also fill needs and match their scheme.

The recruiting season drama is annoying as hell. Yes, I'd like to get as many of the "highly ranked" recruits as we can - but not if they don't really want to be here. Come to Aggieland because you want to be an Aggie and play in the best stadium in the country in front of the 12th Man. Not for Sumlin, uniforms, swag, etc.

Great strategy. Our team will consist of a bunch of out of shape, noodle armed kids that want to act like they are from the country. Probably have those cool deer hunting decals on their trucks too.

Here's a good mix:

5 stars with the work ethic of walk ons and 3 stars.

With same coaching your team of 5 stars will beat your team of 3 stars.

For an individual player, a high star rating may not be a predictor for success.

For an a aggregate of players, it usually is.

You do realize that is because there are only maybe 2 dozen 5* recruits each year and HUNDREDS of 3* recruits each. Ya, there's no possible way that has anything to do with that "fact". Geez. So let's do some math.

Let's say there's 25 5* per year
Roughly 100 5* guys in all of college football on a given year
Each of the 116 or so schools has 85 guys on scholarship
So of the 9,860 scholarship players only 100 are 5* guys.
Thats 0.01% of players in college football.
Half those 5* guys aren't draft eligible bc they're either freshman or sophomores.
So you MIGHT have 40-50 5* guys in any given draft..
But yes continue to tell me how it's all the 3* guys who get drafted.

It's been proven that the aggregate of higher ranked talent wins the most. But it's also important to remember that the higher ranked talent tends to go to large programs with historical programs that also have good/great coaching staffs.

Obviously we want as many highly rated prospects as possible, if for no other reason than perception. Perception can open so many doors for teams these days.

But coaching and developement, to me are an even bigger key to success than *'s. Scheme is another huge factor.

Going against the grain with your offense can lead to prolific outcomes. But you need to players to be completely sold execute a scheme to near perfection. Crisp rout runners like Ryan Swopes provided, with sure handed catching. Not fearing the hit after catch but rather focused on catching the ball for whatever gain it may be.

Leadership from the QB and the confidence from the players on the field that if they do their job, the play will have a positive end result.

I would love to have a LB Corp with the mentally of Mark Dodge combined with the talent and measurables like those of the Bama LB's.

Sorta like the original 12th man kickoff teams. Nothing/everything to lose, and the mindset/chip that they are just as good as the scholarship players a cross from them.

*'s matter if you want your program to get the ratings and reviews from the media and fans, the perception of future success. *'s don't matter when they lack the work ethic or mentality to put it all together. And that's where the coaching staff can be all of the difference. Respect for the coach you play for, the school you play for and the program you play for determines on-field success, in my opinion, more often than not.

Bama knows how to groom that God given talent giving them guys that have God given talent plus a great work ethic with egos checked at the door.
