It shouldn't be this hard to do. When every swinging d*** on TexAgs has all the answers how can all of our coaching hires not?

We can get it right, Just wait 'til next year!

I believe we have Jerry Jones Syndrome. Heck, Jerry got it right and then lost it because of ego. He'd rather be in total control and lose than hire a real GM and have a decent shot to win.

We have BMA's that won't leave it to the professionals. They are allowed to do so by weak leadership.

One thing that bothered me is our "once in a lifetime" player resulted in a Cotton Bowl win. Most other places these type players get to the National Championship game. VY, Cam, Jameis.

Sustained winning programs aren't built on once in a lifetime players.

Because people rise to their level of incompetence across all levels of the decision making process

But this is true across the board. A&M may be the most underperforming program of all time when normalized for resources and support.

Decisions made by committees instead of a strong visionary leader are always weaker. The real focus probably should be to get an AD for the next ten to fifteen years, with vision, fortitude and leadership qualities and then get out of their way.

cant simply be an inability to find the "right" coach

I think the answer is in our face but we're transitioning towards the right direction for that winning outcome we all desire. Hubenak did a serviceable game to help put 21 points on the board. He IS the typical QB that Alabama had for a long time (avg field general). We have the "Chief", now we just need an OC to put a fearless warrior mentality on offense!

Sure we lost a bowl game but it came down to a final drive and potential win. Screw what everyone else is saying because our trajectory is rising despite the win/loss per year! Have you ever looked at a damn stock market trend? The sample size is too small to measure right now! WE HAVE AN END OF SEASON WINNING RECORD!

We're too busy comparing our team to other anomalous organizations expecting the exact same results or better. We are in the hardest division in college football and our work must surpass those that have the easiest path (see BDF/B1G). The variables are too great to measure and pinpoint because we have no idea what a 17-19 year old athlete is thinking (small portion of the whole equation). Recruiting will play a crucial role in our growth and our improvement is something to factor as a positive since cutting the cord from the big 12.

The OP has already defined that we have 7 pieces of the ingredients needed to be a national power! The other parts of the process sadly, "TAKES TIME" to build and we are on our way despite the "sip" saturated media. If Sumlin didn't know what he was doing, we wouldn't have the "Chief" here! I know I complained about the Louisville game but if we didn't have "Chief", that score would be far worse than the final outcome (the "D" kept us in the game).

If we adopt a quiet warriors mentality and build this program piece by piece, we will move up the domination ladder without a doubt. Emulate/benchmark what Stanford University did and we'll be there! Then we'll get this football thing right!

This x 1000!

Sumlin is the symptom of the problem. Our athletic department needs strong leadership to create a culture of accountability. Then, we can fire/hire coaches that will win and win with class. Firing Sumlin now, even if it needs to be done, is simply a knee jeek decision if we don't regain the culture of winning that Byrne started.

Afraid so! Look back since Bear Bryant, from Bear to Jackie Sherrill we had losers, from Jackie to present we had losers, YES it is the inability to find the right coach. Stupid people hiring stupid people. Who wants to come here that has any coaching ability, the general state of athletics at A&M is always in shamble, damned AGGIE JOKE! Did I mention gutless AD??!!

We are no more impatient than any other fan base/administration. RC had, what, 13 years. Fran, Sherm, Sumlin each with four. Four seems about the norm in determining if a coach has his program on the right track. No one doubts the sense in getting rid of Fran or Sherm (although there has been more Sherm nostalgia on here lately).

And which of those other impatient fan bases/administrations have produced consistent top 10 (20-25) programs over the ensuing four years? In fact, what are the universal parameters of "the right track?"
Hugh Freeze just finished his 4th season. Right track?

That's one! Care to discuss Ole Miss' previous four hires?

The point being that changing coaches is a craps shoot. We probably could have had Freeze when we hired Sumlin, but he wasn't on many radars a year into the Arkansas State job. He had close ties to some Ole Miss insiders and the school decided to take the risk. I've always believed Mississippi State did very well too with Mullen, but some in Starkville believe the Bulldogs are not on the right track anymore.

There are few home runs out there. Tennessee, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia and others may all score well with their most recent picks, but the odds say no. In any case, a four-year test strip may be too short.

So it sounds like the consensus is bma's. Let's demand the admin accept no more money from them- problem solved.

Keep in mind, since we are a state funded entity, their is a salary cap any state employee can be paid, so the max we can pay is what a decent high school coach get pays.

Maybe we should have a rule that limits what the max amount anyone can donate is; then those who hate the so called bma's can belly up to the and help carry the weight.

My opinion about us (I am an Aggie, btw):

a) Too many "black and white" thinking engineer types. Building a football program is not like building a bridge; lots more intangibles, subjectivity, nuances, character evaluation, etc.
b) Deep-rooted military tradition. Being loyal to the death is good for foxholes - not so much for other things. Obeying orders without questioning (like a robot) is good for charging up hills - not so much for other things.

Flame away.
I get (a) but you are so far in left field with (b). Your probably a sip.

This is stupid. Emory Bellard was not a loser and neither was R.C. Emory lost the team his last year but probably should have been kept a little longer. R.C. won titles and was a great coach. Just because he didn't win the MNC doesn't make him a loser.

I don't think Sumlin is a loser. But for some reason he lost the team. He very well needs to be replaced, but he will probably go on and do well somewhere else.
