My mom is from Kentucky and she pronounces it this way as well. Also, the locals draw the name out a bit as well when they say it, although one could argue that that is more of an overall southern trait than a Kentucky one.

As a former resident and student, its looh uh vul. And for the few knocking them, it's a great town and atmosphere. They have also had more success than us in major sports.
