Welcome to the week 7 breakdown of the 2015 Fightin' Texas Aggie offense.

Data from Week 7

It's going to be short this week. Every aspect of our offense has been discussed ad nauseam so I don't have much else to offer.

You don't need much data to realize the offense was awful. I put asterisks up for the 2nd and 3rd down distance averages because of our 2nd and 31 / 3rd and 29 situation in the first quarter. I took those out to give a truer look at the averages.

Our 3rd down conversions sucked. We failed on both 4th down attempts. More on that later.

We had a whopping 2 splash plays because our quarterback couldn't hit water if he fell out of a boat. I think that saying applies...

Personnel Groups

I didn't notice any glaring trends from the data other than nothing worked. We tried lining Kirk up as a RB and him being a decoy led to our biggest play of the game. That was about the only bright spot all night.

Targets

Ole Miss did a great job shutting Kirk down. It was the first time since Ball State where he didn't see the most targets. Ricky was the only receiver to gain 10+ yards on a reception all night. Tra saw the second most targets. That's never good.

Passing Charts

You guys watched the game. Lot's of X's on the chart this week. Man that was painful to watch. There were a few passes I had trouble figuring out who the target was because the passes were so bad. I agree with the majority that Kyle needed to be replaced way before that call was made. Shoulder injury or not, he was dreadful and I actually started to feel bad for him in the 3rd quarter. His blank stare after jogging to the sidelines after every 3 and out didn't do him any favors. He looked like he needed a hug.

Conclusions

I mentioned 4th downs earlier, and I took this screen shot because to me it felt like the theme of our night and our season. Yes, it's 4th and 1 with under 7 minutes left and we are down by 20. I realize that converting this play wasn't going to win us the game, but it displayed what I think is wrong with our offense. If you can't tell, Ole Miss lined up in cover zero. They had 8 men in the box, meaning our three wide receivers were all lined up man to man with no safety help. Ole Miss knew damn well we weren't going to pass the ball in that situation and they didn't care if they showed their hand. One quick move from Kirk and it's a footrace to the end zone.

When I started this breakdown last year I had high hopes for Spavital. I gave him the benefit of the doubt and like a few other posters, I thought he was going to do well. I still think his play designs (I can't say scheme without being ridiculed) are smart and can work in the right situation. It's clear the plays can get guys open, and wide open. See the first series where Kyle overthrew Ricky. I'm not saying Spavital's plays are the only ones in the NCAA that get guys wide open. I'm just saying they can work.

Unfortunately, in my opinion Spavital is falling below expectations in every other job duty of the offensive coordinator position. His in-game play calling is at times very questionable and his in-game adjustments seem to never happen. I thought we were a team that saw what a defense was showing and we adjusted the call. I never see adjustments when the opponent stacks the box (like above) and vice versa. We seem to play right into what the defense wants. Predictable is a word I see on nearly every thread discussing our offense. It's also been discussed parts of our scheme don't match our personnel, like running the zone read with Kyle and Tra.

Another issue I have is execution. After a while when a coach repeatedly speaks on poor execution it's probably time he start looking in the mirror and getting to the root cause of the lack of execution. Could it be Lack of proper coaching? Just a guess.

There are also small details that seem to cause big issues. Details like no longer (or very rarely) running run-pass option plays, where a run and a pass are built into the same play. That was a staple of our offense last year, but I guess Kyle either can't read a defense or Spavital took that aspect of the offense out this year. Now our wide receivers block on runs which leads to defensive backs playing run first. It's now a guarantee that if it's a run situation there will be a defensive back blitzing. Also discussed is the pulling guard and moving the pocket. Watching Kyle run that stupid play-action on 2nd and long while Cheek pulls to the left made me want stab my eyes with a rusty pair of scissors. It literally made me cringe a few times when Kyle moved to his left because I knew the pass was going to go anywhere but into the receiver's hands.

It's now two years in a row our quarterbacks have completely crashed and burned halfway into the season. I see poor mechanics with Kyle, and I know I remember people complaining about Kenny's mechanics after his poor performance against Mississippi State last season. Highly touted quarterbacks aren't supposed to have those types of issues after two years in the program, at least not as often as they seem to happen each game.

I think the idea that gets me the most upset is failing under the bright lights two years in a row. I feel like the frustration of knowing a chance at a dream season is over before November 1st caused a lot of the uproar on the message boards after the game. The frustration of another offensive collapse was the tipping point of benching another quarterback and reevaluating the offense from top to bottom. The thought of another mediocre 8-9 win season drives me crazy considering the talent we have on the roster. I understand circumstances are partially to blame for the current state of our running back position but that's why you get paid the big bucks, to figure out how to make what you have work.

There's so much more I could type but I'm tired of typing and you're probably tired of reading my rant.

Once again, thanks for reading and I will see you all next week I guess.

Agree particularly on the QB coaching point - it is lacking badly. Some have suggested that Kyle is a mediocre talent which is remarkably dense to me.

Every now and then there does seem to be a brilliant play design the gets people open like 2pt play vs. Arkansas, but this isn't so uncommon that it can't be done by another that can call a decent game at other times.

My goodness, am I looking at this right? Was there literally not even a target that wasn't picked towards the middle of the field?

I just found South Carolina's Defensive Game Plan!

On a 4th and 1, they're trying to instill a physical attitude now which, when you need 1 damn yard, you can fire off and get 1 F'n yard.
Isn't working, obviously. But that's part of why Christensen is here.

And if we checked out of that play and threw to Kirk on a streak, on a night where Allen is clearly struggling, and our WRs who are physically too soft and unable to create separation and work themselves open, and Kirk working across from a guy that can burn just as hot as he can.....our staff would have got publicly roasted even more than they already are if they'd have checked out to a pass.

For 1 yard....1 damn yard....go and F'n bow up and TAKE that damn yard.

If the qb was under center that might make sense.

O design is the problem. Our secret is out and we are easy to prepare for especially when we have some players who do not execute well on the o line. 3rd down and need two and we get stuffed. That has been the problem for two years? A good coaching team has to adjust with the talent here. Wide receivers need better routes and they need to do a better job getting open.

Also KS needs to get a handle on the locker room. He is not their mother he is their coach.

Two things. I think that "power run game" we have been sold is a bunch of crap. I've watched every snap this season and last season and I haven't seen much, if any difference in our run game. We might using different blocking techniques but it's the same formations and same run plays.

Second, how would you beat 8 defenders with 6 blockers when the defense knows you are going to run between the tackles? We could have slipped Caden out to the flat, we could have thrown the quick slant to Kirk, heck the speed option would have probably worked considering every defender sold out to stop the run.

And for the record Hubenak was in the game on that drive and I assume his accuracy would have been a little better than Kyle's. I'll take my chances with him and Kirk versus our o-line and Tra.

I feel he's improved this season, one of a few bright spots on the offense. His production would be greatly improved but he's had a few errant passes come his way. I specifically remember a slant thrown way over his head earlier in the season as well as the play last Saturday early in the game that would have went for bug yards and possibly a touchdown.

I also find a few plays a game where he runs a slant or an in route but he's not Kyle's first read so he doesn't get the ball. It's frustrating to watch because he routinely beats his man one on one.

Yea I totally agree on the run game. Not one thing has changed from scheme to production. What is Christiansen doing?

Actually, you're one of the few ranters I have confidence in. I'm generally pretty slow to jump on the "someone needs to be fired" or "someone needs to be benched" bandwagon. But when someone who's obviously leveled headed such as you begins to question the OC I have to seriously question our coaching situation too.

Your screenshot shows exactly why we need a new OC. There is a simple way that most teams put pressure on that defensive set.

That defensive lineup is just begging us to roll the QB to the right, runoff the man coverage with the WRs, slip your RB into the flat on the right (pulling in the linebackers), and slip the H back through the line and drag him across the middle behind the LBs pursuing the play to the right. It isn't the easiest of throws, but the H back will be wide open 90% of the time if he makes it through the LOS cleanly. The problem is that Ole Miss (and everyone else) knows we are not going to throw to the H back at all.

It would seem really important to scour the country and study all the literature to find an offensive scheme that stops causing our quarterbacks to have mental breakdowns halfway through the season. That should probably be our top priority.

Hit the proverbial nail on the head with an infinite force. That's exactly who we were under Kliff; a team that adjusted their game plan according to what the defense gave us. We took advantage of our personnel and took what defenses gave us.

The fourth-and-one play in your screenshot and the play preceding it highlight the biggest problem the Aggies face on offense. Ignoring the questionable design of the plays, there is a perplexing breakdown in communication and coordination among linemen.

On the third-and-one effort, Ole Miss linebacker Zedrick Woods (36) takes a position just outside defensive end Victor Evans (14), a move pointed out by Aggie slot receiver Ricky Seals-Jones. Left tackle Avery Gennesy gets the message and at the snap moves out to block Woods. Sadly, left guard Keaton Sutherland doesn't get the word and moves downfield to block linebacker DeMarquis Gates (31), leaving Evans totally untouched as he zooms in to bury running back James White. Incidentally, no one bothered to block the defensive end on the other side either, but Evans didn't need his help.

So move to fourth-and-one, where, as your screenshot shows, Ole Miss puts six on the line and the Aggies put tight-end Caden Smith in a blocking back position behind Gennesy. At the snap, Smith moves across the formation to pick up the outside defender on the Aggies' right side. This time, Gennesy takes care of Evans at defensive end, but that leaves no one to confront linebacker Denzel Nkemdiche (4) on the left side of the Aggie line. Again, it's a straight shot to White as he takes the handoff five yards off the line of scrimmage. The play is stuffed.

Pick any play from Saturday (and the Saturday before) and it's a near certainty you can find a similar breakdown. But it's not a new situation. It occurred repeatedly last year as well. It's particularly egregious when opponents employ defensive line stunts and delayed blitzes. Think Louisiana-Monroe.

Much of the problem can probably be attributed to exotic blocking schemes for Spavital's complex playbook. But if Christensen was hired to bring some order to the offensive line to boost A&M's rushing attack, his grade would be pretty close to F.
