"It goes down to just exchange problems. You're putting a quarterback and center in a situation you don't practice often. And if you're in a situation where the game's on the line and there's an exchange problem ... that's why you see a lot of teams just stay in shotgun".

My suggestion - practice the damn QB under center. No reason we should not have this in our playbook. Basic middle school, high school play.

Then you have fewer reps in the shotgun, increasing the odds of an exchange problem there.

If I recall correctly, Tom Landry either introduced or brought back the shotgun to the pros. When they got down to the goal line, his QB went under center.

Also less reps practicing the offense. I think if they had unlimited time restrictions I believe they would practice under center plays.

That's not all he said. He went on to say that they do indeed practice it but he's unwilling to risk a fumbled snap with a big 300lb nose tackle against Mike Matthews. If anything it was a bit of a slam against Mike.

Enviroag -

I saw that as well and think it's a lame excuse. Most college centers play against 300lb nose tackles and are still able to hike the ball under center while still able to make a good block, Must be a slam on Mathews.

Nothing builds confidence like throwing your players under the bus.

Spav's response sux.

College teams do it all the time.

So we are going to keep running the shotgun when we KNOW it does not work in short yardage because he is afraid of a center/QB exchange the MIGHT happen.

He would FAIL is business.

Go bold or go home.

Rant over!!!!!

Spavs guy Holgerson does it, does it often not just on 3rd down or goal line. Someone should tell Spav it's ok Mike Leach won't find out.

This whole entire "spread offense" is like playing with one hand tied behind your back. It's a well we can't do anything and everything trying to win offense.

So we suck in the red zone because Spav is scared to run a real offense.

We are not a power running team. When we get to the red zone, get Reynolds 1 on 1 and throw it up. Move Kirk around around and get him the ball in space. Put Kyler or Kirk in the wildcat and let them do their thing.

Making decisions out of fear...not a great recipe for success in any endeavor.

So what's difference between a qb under center turning his back to a defense and handing it off to a rb 7-9 yards off the line of scrimmage and taking a snap and handing to a back a 5-7yds while reading the defense? Under center is only an advantage for qb sneak.. In crunch time, you go with what you do best.. Not what you practice a few times a week.

Not sure if serious, but just in case, you get a much more powerful run game with the back coming downhill to take the handoff.

Probably just me. But I'll trust the strategy and expertise of someone who has been in coaching for years and earned the job as offensive coordinator of a major D1 university... Over morons on the internet who maybe played high school football like me.

I'll eat crow if the wheels come off on this thing, but we are getting yards, winning the turnover battle, and winning games.

If Spav runs it up the middle and gets little yardage, TexAgs complains. If he changes it up and runs a trick play that gets sniffed out, TexAgs complains. He gives it to Tra Carson and gets stopped at the goal line, TexAgs complains. He runs a screen or draw on the goal line and it doesn't work, TexAgs complains we didn't run it up the middle with Carson. If he snaps it from the shotgun in short yardage, TexAgs complains. If he were to run 1 play from under center and it failed or fumbled, TexAgs would complain.

If he goes 5-0, beats 2 SEC conference opponents, has the 22nd ranked overall offense in the FBS (2nd in the SEC), scores 39 ppg with the 10 highest scoring offense in the FBS (1st in the SEC), TexAgs STILL complains.

I kind of agree with him on this one. Players are used to the shotgun and have been doing it the whole game why go under center? We're all spread anyway if KA got under center then it seems like a good way to announce we are running the ball (for the most part).
I like that we're seeing some from the Wildcat too. Just wish we had a big fella like J-Train for the goal line.

Under center, the back is moving forward from the snap until he gets to the line. In the shotgun, he has to move sideways at the snap to generate any speed. It's also a LOT easier to get an effective lead block because the FB can fire off the ball, often getting to his assignment too fast for the defense to read the block. Short yardage running is a game of inches.

There's a reason every power run game that doesn't feature a big, strong QB as the primary runner goes from under center.

I'm completely serious. That would be great if ran it all the time. But we don't. Why do something different than what got you to the goal line? The downhill running can be accomplished from pistol as well. We aren't a power running team. We don't like and move bodies off the ball. We zone block and counter. Maybe the new o-line coach will get us some smashers, but we don't have them now. So we stick with what we know

Why does TexAgs want a run team when we've got a QB who threw for 322 yards? We aren't a run offense. Sumlin's legacy is in the air. We need a fat fullback for the goaline and the occassional run from Tra but our strength is our QB and our WRs.

Wait...is this really how you envision it or did you create a scenario in which the answer you desire is the only plausible result?

7-9 yards? A QB under center runs almost 10 yards back to a standing still Rb to hand the ball off? That's how your mind sees am under-center handoff?

You asked a general question about what the advantage of it is, and I told you.
LawCC
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Maybe I didn't make myself clear. The back gets that ball at the same point. And ok so he has momentum.. But we don't run that offense.. And being in the gun allows many more options.
