Why is this good news? Didn't we used to be in the top ten?

Numbers are based on NSF data. The historical trends going back to 2003 are here. We were as high as 18 in 2009 and fell out of the top 20 until 2013. Reabsorbing the med school probably helped a lot. The numbers may be low depending on how funding through TAES and TEES on the TAMU campus is counted.

Our rank in federal numbers are less impressive. Not sure how the non-federal breaks out at TAMU. Texas schools should have some advantages vs other states in my areas from the Welch Foundation and CPRIT. I assume ENGR has significant private sources for research funding. Of course, other states have their own things.

Not to burst your bubble too much, but I'm told most of the difference is simply making the medical school part of TAMU as a college rather than separate agency.
