I don't understand the mentality for not having a press conference to announce this hire. It feel like it would have given Chavis a great opportunity to discuss the direction of his defense and consequently (potentially) help to close out this recruiting class strong on that side of the ball. Thanks for any rational input.

It would be swell if we could get new topics every once in a while.

Actually I was kinda thinking the same thing........for such a "home run hire" this thing sure has been awfully low key. Maybe Chief prefers it that way?

He may still be trying to figure out WTF he's gonna do w this defense....might not know where to begin, or how to answer those kinds of questions!

Legal issues on the divorce. LSU is the crazy ex girlfriend to him just like Baylor was with us.

IDK if this is the sole reason, but Chavis isn't a glory hound. Has never been his gig. Guy just wants to do his job and leave all of the PR glad-handing and back-slapping to others. One of the main reasons he doesn't want to ever be a HC.

I'm sure they want to get the buyout finalized. There's probably some sort of contractual penalty if he officially takes a job before squaring the buyout.

I'm fine with letting his talking be on the field with a much improved defense

I agree with this as well. Chavis does not seem like the type who enjoys press conferences or public relations of any type. Part of why he's a bad ass.

If he is such and introvert, maybe we should have him read Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can't Stop Talking.

Speaking of not being a media hound or dealing with the media, etc., etc., ... something somewhat along the same lines (a question I have wondered about).

NSIAA - Does Saban pretty much conduct all press dealings alone (post-game media pressers and weekly pre-game media events) - without his offensive or defensive coordinators being a part of them? I know the Aggies (we) do not. Snyder and Spav have always been part of the pressers.

If this is true, what do you think of head coach handling all of press meetings? Positive and negative? Saban keeps the lid on all information and opinion. I can see benefits in doing that.

Saban is a CEO type coach. The buck stops with him. Hence, he is the coaching face of Bama football, period. One voice, one message. Won't risk a DC/OC straying off the reservation in terms of message.

Besides, did you hear what Kiffin said about him at the Broyles Award Dinner??? Sarcastic and joking, sure. Saban even joked that was why he didn't let Kiffin speak to the media.

Thanks hawg ... do you think there is an advantage or disadvantage to a football program of having only the head coach be the spokesman?

I watched most of the pre- and post-game pressers this year and while on the whole Coaches Snyder and Spav did fine there were those moments (especially when the season was and had taken a turn for the worse) where I wished they had refrained from answering a line of questioning. Don't get me wrong I enjoy hearing what they have to say but I think in regards to open press situations one voice may be the better way. Saban effectively keeps the lid on what is said coming out of Alabama football and he'll bite the head off a media member that crosses his line. He controls the situation.

Does anyone know how these are conducted in any of the other SEC programs? One voice or several? What about LSU and Miles? Did the Chief participate in pre- and post-game media pressers at LSU?

More of a matter of personal style and comfort level. Sumlin and Kingsbury could work the room together, feed off of each other.

I'm sure Sumlin wished his co-ordinators hadn't said a few things that they did this past season. Not saying that's the reason Snyder was canned, but it sure played into the decision. During the pre-season build-up, Sumlin gave Snyder a pass for 2013 because of the number of really young players he had. The post-game comment he gave about revisiting tackling during practice nearly 3/4s into the season, had to chap Sumlin's butt.

I honestly can't tell you whether the Chief participated in all that many pressers with Miles. I know I don't recall ever seeing him, though.

Spurrier by and large is also a solo act.

Harder to throw someone under the bus when they are sitting next to you.

Thanks once again, hawg.

Just my opinion but I think the solo act is the better smarter way to go.
The coordinators could be made available under certain controlled media situations for interviews but for pre- and post-game pressers I think it's wise to be careful and sometimes deflect refuse and/or give a good non-answer. Too many voices expose too much risk of saying a wrong or harmful thing inadvertently

You don't have a press conference to introduce assistant coaches. Maybe Auburn had one, nobody else will.

You hold press conferences when you have something to say, or your target audience should, or is entitled to, know what's going on. KDS and the powers that be decide that.

Or run the gauntlet.

Wouldn't that be awesome to watch Gabe and Homer run that drill?

Billy could be the tackling dummy at the end....

Anyone that's anyone in college football including recruits knows about our hire. Maybe chief isn't someone to want a press conference.
