is the requirement to sit a play after your helmet comes off.

Strap it on the right way and it won't be popping off all the time.

Lost helmets have gone down a ton after that rule was made.

Chin straps must be defective these days. This wasn't a problem years ago. Now it's an epidemic.

They are fitting them differently in todays world... all has to do with trying to prevent concussions.

Yes, I did play QB in HS and I never lost my helmet in the game. But I had all the snaps on every time.

If you watch the games where the helmet comes of it usually has nothing to do with the player NOT strapping on the helmet. It has more to do with a violent hit or being in a pile of players.

Yes, helmets come off from time to time, but go watch games in the couple of years leading up to the rule vs games now. Before, helmets cane off every other play. Now, it's rare.

Which is a product of the rule. Players were intentionally not buttoning their chin straps and helmets would come off much more frequently

Don't have a big problem with helmet rule and not nearly as bad as targeting. Players are being ejected sometimes based on interpretation when they simply trying to make a play and the head/neck contact is incidental or sometimes didn't occur. Other times it is not even called. Penalty is OK I guess but ejection is too subjective.

I still think if you go down with an injury, you have to be out at least for the rest of the series. No more of this "flopping" junk. I get it, people get hurt. But if they are hurt, they need to be out for at least a series to make sure they aren't really hurt.

This would have required WV to use their 2nd string kicker for that one FG try.

helmet attached properly did not come off...

But he's a kicker and is not burdened by things other players are (ex: practice, meaningful game time, cleatchasers, etc), so he has time to tweak his chinstrap for optimal fit, comfort, and performance.

Totally agree. It used to happen WAY more frequently. To me, it seemed like dreds were causing it, but as you say, now that there's a rule the problem magically lessened.

This is not entirely true. Last night the same Ohio St receiver lost his helmet at least 3 times. Once he was hit near the midsection and it popped his helmet off. It was a hard hit but if his helmet was in place properly it should not have come off. I'm sure some players find it uncomfortable and leave it loose. I didn't play alot of football bt I do know that when I had my headgear on properly it wasn't gonna come off very easily.

Could it also have anything to do with the way the helmets and chi straps are made now?

When I played, this is what my chinstrap looked like

ccolley68, we had the option for better chinstraps. Big uglies just opted for the Brett Favre approach. On second thought, the better chinstraps may have been more available to the skill players.

When I played years ago we had two snap chin straps - and I don't believe I ever saw a helmet come off a player. It just didn't happen. More often than not, the helmet was so tight you had to pull on the ear holes to get it on your head. You often saw players with a big red mark on their forehead from the pressure in the front. They were so tightly fitted, you'd probably lose both ears if the helmet were ripped off.

Today it seems many players aren't snapping all four snaps. Perhaps they are wearing the helmets looser and letting the air out of the cushions so that they will be more comfortable.

When a player comes to the sideline they just do a little tug and off flips the helmet.

I used both styles in high school. The newer ones i felt slipped off ur chin more easily due to them not really forming around your chin.

I think another issue with helmets coming off though is the padding in the helmet below your ears around the jaw line, the jaw pad. Those were the pads that mostly prevented the helmet from coming off.

You see all these players today that have their helmets flying off can easily just slip on/off the helmet, the weight of the helmet alone allows it to slip on.

I used an older style helmet in high school, maybe with all these new concussion prevention helmets, the jaw pad location has changed causing it to no longer be the cause of how hard it was too put on a helmet

Just a thought

Ours, nearly 50 years ago, as was mentioned above, would just about take your ears off, if they were knocked or pulled off.

It has nothing to do with chin straps. It is the fit. Players are wanting the helmets to fit much looser and coaches, for some idiotic reason, are letting them wear them that way. Coaches are taking the attitude of not wanting to fight that battle instead of doing the job even if it takes more effort..

Always thought these looked like a tiny pair of under wear & would therefore offer the best support.
