I know what your talking about but it doesn't apply to a defender who is the closest person in pursuit.

I would liked to have seen the ref check on him by holding up his arm. Of course it would have quickly dropped limply to his side. The ref could have checked again...with the same results.

But had the ref risen the arm the 3rd time, he would have started to drop the arm, but then raised and waved the finger to sky, Hulkster style.

I would have liked to have seen that.

Don't think the kicker was going to catch him. #17 should have turned up field and blocked. Might have scored on the return. As it turns out they scored anyway AND left Baylor with less time so probably was better that way.

I don't see how he is defenseless or didn't see that coming. The blocker was not coming completely from the side but at an angle from the front of the kicker.

Just because the kicker is ignorant enough to run into traffic doesn't mean the blocker should be penalized.

Yes, he was defenseless. He was a player on the receiving end of a blindside block = defenseless. You're right about the helmet hit not automatically being targeting, But the block is by a bigger guy on a shorter guy and wasn't really "forcible" contact. He didn't launch or really lead, but just threw a block.

It was LEGAL blocking of a player that can potentially make the tackle....... he was very much pursuing the ball carrier and hence was "open game" and should have had his head on a swivel
