What exactly will he do as "run game coordinator"?

Sounds like your average business seeking a startup mentality with experienced generalists.

Still looks like 2 guys doing the job of 1 man...

If not, why wouldn't everyone have a "run coordinator"?

The only time I've ever heard of something like that was with the Cowboys:

Scott Linehan: Passing Game Coordinator

Seemed odd then, seems odd now. I think it gives Christensen an extra title so that they can pay him more. I think he may also get to manage the running play designs and their blocking schemes.

And you'll need to learn to spell his name correctly.

Several NFL teams have split their defensive coordinator duties. It makes more sense, to me, on the defensive side because defenses have personnel and schemes dictated to them by opponents, and those dictations change weekly.

A lot of teams have assistant head coaches, the Bucs have a "senior defensive assistant", etc... that are meant to encourage more collaboration among the coaching staff.

My understanding is the Cowboys only have one play-caller, and their offensive coordinator and the passing game coordinator are just expected to be collaborative in play design and game planning.

I don't think its a bad thing for the Cowboys- they're having a great year offensively, and I don't think it will be a bad thing for our young, and still learning, offensive coordinator to have such an experienced guy at his side.

I think you are underestimating the number of teams that do have run/pass coordinators.

I must be (?)... Raining outside, I'll check it out and see what I find.

these schools all have either (1) co-coordinators on offense or (2) a coordinator of the passing or running game (number is committee rankings)

2-Oregon
3-FSU
4-tOSU
5-Baylor
6-TCU
7-Miss. State
8-Mich. State
9-Ole Miss
10-Arizona
11-KSU

13-Georgia
14-UCLA
15-Arizona State

Its a fairly common thing these days.

This is likely a title to get him paid a little more than just O Line coach.

He's going to sure up the schemes up front and bring hopefully some of the mizzou spread power schemes to the offense. All your O line coaches are essentially run game coordinators. When I was coaching the OC would defer the blocking schemes to O Line and asst O line coach and we would make sure we were sound scheme wise with the formations he wanted to run out of.

I like this hire. I think we will see an improved run game and offense out of it.

I'm all for people coordinating various facets of the game in practice, but on game day there needs to be only one person calling plays and they should be in the box. We don't need to slow that process down even more.

Bottom line - some of you are trying way too hard to find things to complain about. Just because a term is new to you doesn't mean anything is wrong or Sumlin is grasping at straws.

You wouldn't need a run game coordinator if you would just give the best guy the ball. What other team gives their leading rusher the fewest snaps? What exactly does McKinney do? Stealing Money!

Our first scoring drive against LSU was running vertical, and Trey broke one up the middle for the score. Inexplicably we then changed to wide runs and horizontal pass plays, against a defense whose talent and alignment were tailer made to stop wide plays. We did not change our attack until too late in the game. It was beyond stupid. Hopefully Christensen can change this.

Stoops did this with Sumlin when he was at Oklahoma. It seemed to work pretty well then.

Well no wonder we sucked so bad on O. We didn't have a Run Coordinator.

Glad we got that fixed.

Sumlin deserves his choice at every coaching position. Then he needs to be accountable for the progress of the team. I don't know that I'm particularly either inspired OR uninspired by this pick, but the promise that he coaches up the way Pinkel does is intriguing.

This was a very solid move by Sumlin. Our offense needed to be tweaked, not blown up. This was a great move. Think of it as adding a Mid Management role to your company. Takes a load off the VP and helps organize the plan better. This is all positive and really smart.
Is this going in to your portfolio of TexAgs posts to be submitted when you apply for a position writing articles for the Maroon and White-Wash Report?

OP I would hope he is getting paid to come in and rejuvenate the offensive line while also bringing a change to the way we run the football. If I am Sumlin I am disgusted by our lack of production with the backs we have.

Fireinthehole: why is the LSU defense "tailor made" to stop outside running plays? Where do you get that nugget of wisdom?

Also, aren't you one of many on this board that always complained about running Trey Williams between the tackles? But for the LSU game that should have been the plan?

It doesn't matter who has the ball, if the Oline can't block effectively. They finally made a hole, Trey hit it and scored. It's not rocket surgery.

PyschoAg,

That one person calling the plays will still be Spav.

Night Hawk basically answered the OP on the first page.

Of course, STX, being the moron that he is, inferred it won't work. Later BMX pointed out that several of the top teams do this.

I wouldn't call it an innovative hire. But we are catching up with the times.

And to the trolling little wench known as STX:

Asking why people should renew their season tickets after losing all of our SEC games at Kyle =/= non-renewing season tickets

It is simply posing a question.

In the real world, people evaluate a product before purchasing it. If you had any authority at all in the business world, you would know this.
