And to some extent, Sumlin doest either. These things take time. It sounds like some of you wanted him to hire Joe shmoe off the street just to have a DC before Malik made his decision.

If Sumlin makes the right hire it won't matter if we missed on 1 5 star recruit. Sumlins job relies on this hire much more so than one recruit.

Go ahead and put yourself in his chair...joking aside, you'd be releasing current staff and very carefully considering upgraded candidates, most of whom would be available to "officially" speak only after bowl games, even though unofficial contact through representative channels could already be happening.

I think Sumlins initial problem is he put more stock into guys that could recruit than guys who could coach. It bit him in the ass, and now he has to be carful and find coaches with a happy medium or he'll be out of a job in 2-3 years.

He has to get this hire right. I wish Malik had chosen us, but as long as we end up with a good to great DC, I will get over losing him.

Regardless of what any of you say, this loss was huge for us.. We didn't have our sh*t together.... Thinking our "Swag" would carry us.... The pick is game changing for Texas , others will follow ( see Nkemdiche and what followed with Ole Miss D) ... We lost the most visible recruit battle we have had with Texas in 5 years and others are watching .... Feburary approaches... We still have time for flips etc., but our Defense is atrocious and we had better make a big move, money is there, only arrogance should keep us from hiring a solid . This is no time for hair brained co- coordinator schemes etc . Wher there is no definite leader.... Kids and their parents obviously see thru the "coach speak"......, Charlie 2...., Swagmaster 0

I think this is the reality check that Sumlin needed. It sucks big time, but you have to believe that he learned something here.

OP you are correct. I would never let an 18 year old dictate to me when/where, I hire my coaches. NEVER.

A great DC hire goes much further than a crap shoot 5 star 18 year old.
