Using the refresh control on the bottom right of a thread gives me an error that a basic subscription is required, but if I open the tab fresh, it opens fine. Chrome on Android.

You know, what I specifically liked about mobile mode was that it didn't load the pictures so some tiddy pushing fool doesn't get me screwed at work. I enjoy viewing that when not on a corporate network but this means phone only from now on.
