Why put a Center in the backfield when you have 3 RB's who hardly get the ball?

We have Tra Carson who can pound/block/run, that makes him versatile. We have 2 other backs that compliment his skill-set. These other RB's sit on the bench because we only put one RB in the backfield at a time. If we put in 2 backs at a time the D wouldn't know what we're going to do. But NO, we put in a Center that will never run or catch the ball. In essence we have added another back that gets more playing time than any back. Why can't we be creative and open up a playbook. This isn't PeeWee football, this is College!

This staff continuously ****s up game after game.
1. Running backs hardly get more than two consecutive snaps before getting yanked. They never get into a rythym. You see the frustration they have every time they break off a good run then get benched the next play. Instead of letting a guy that's fired up keep playing, they put in some one who is cold.
2. Total misuse of stable of backs. Tra on outside, both Williams on the inside. Who the **** in their right mind would do this? On short yardages Tra has to be the one back there. If you can't get one or two yards a majority of the time with your biggest and most powerful back, you have no business playing this game!

Also....Who ****ing throws to a tight end BEHIND the los on 4th and short?!? Who ****ing does that?!

OP, can you just start one all-encompassing thread of "SwagObserver's Whiny Complaints" instead of crapping all over this entire board?

Isn't that exactly what the 1972 dolphins did to become so difficult to beat?

They must not feel Tra can block as well. I'm with you on throwing in some misdirection in the running game since we've had trouble lining up and moving people off the ball. Also seems that would be a way to be able to run Tra almost exclusively N/S without being predictable, which is the only reason I can imagine they run him outside as much as they do.

Of course we had a huge third down conversion throwing to Compton out of the backfield,
and a huge td run with a smaller back up the middle.
glad you guys aren't coaches, y'all just want to fire them.

Not to mention we have to receivers that were QB's in High school Jones and Noil and maybe more. We never ran any trick plays etc. God it was boring as hell watching this O function. With the talent we have on O the D should never have a clue what the **** is coming next.

Did you actually read the posts on this thread? Or did you read the first sentence in the OP and decide to reward us with your snarky brand of humor?

The reason LSU can pound the ball down the opponents throats is because we rotate backs. Fournette had a great game against yall but so did Magee and Williams. Hilliard was out with injury. But we rotate them to keep them fresh. And we usually have 2 out there. You will get there. Good luck with the DC hire.

He is a better blocker. He weighs 300 pounds, 35% more than our biggest back.

I doubt y'all run a strict 4 play rotation of backs. Doesn't matter the situation or the down, if it's play number 5, a new back is going in. Ridiculous.

Load of crap. Yall only pounded the ball against bad defenses. Arky shut you out and several teams held you to 17 PTs or less. Your offense sucks. The only reason you won 8 games is because of your defense.

OP - agree that we didn't run our offense correctly. But disagree with you about how we should run our offense. We don't need a TE, Hback or 2 RBs. We need to spread the field, and not just horizontally. We need to quit trying to protect the defense and go fast. We need to use our RBs a lot more in the passing game. We need a dual threat QB.

It's revolutionary and ground breaking. Everyone will be doing it soon once they too become enlightened.

Our playcalling is predictable. All too often, I can correctly call out the play based on the formation, and I'm just some guy on a couch.

We only run about four plays, which means that defenses gets all week to work on blowing up bubble screens and handoffs out of the shotgun.

We don't take advantage of our players' strengths. Every once in a while, bouncing the big back outside will get big yardage. Every once in a while, throwing a bubble screen to the big slow guy will work out. I'm actually a fan of handing the ball off to small fast guys up the middle, because they can sneak through holes and get into space faster. However, we almost exclusively go away from our offensive players' strengths.

The defense loads the box against Carson, so we play into their hands by trying to run outside. Newsflash: if we fire off the ball in front of Carson, we should be able to pick up yards even against a loaded box!

They play off RSJ on the edge because they know they can recover to him, but we try the screen anyway. We absolutely refuse to go strength on strength. Throw the ball to Speedy, because he has a chance to shake the first tackle and get some yards, whereas RSJ is a tree just waiting to get chopped down.

Of course, this becomes less of a problem if you have more then four plays from which to choose.

I thought our offensive performance in conference play was even worse than our defense.

This. He plowed the road for our running backs when they followed him.

And I agree 100% that we rotate our backs too often. If we have "situational" running backs, than Ds will pick up on that and adjust accordingly. The only "situational" back we should have is on short yardage - and that should ALWAYS be Carson. Otherwise, plan on playing a back until he's gassed or you've determined he's ineffective. One play is not enough for either of those.

As soon as it was decided we were going to do this we should have been coaching up James White for this job. He is a f'n sledge-hammer and really only gets to play on STs.

OL play has regressed tremendously and I don't like our running game scheme, even with a true spread offense you can have a power running game, see Shermans offense and also the GB Packers and Patriots.

But whatever, it is what it is, and whatever it is, absolutely 100000% we need to have a true #1 back that gets 15-25 touches and a #2 back who gets the other 5-15 touches.

Why any RB would ever commit to Sumlin is beyond me. Eventually it will only be guys whose other offers are from the likes of tech, Iowa State, ULM, Kansas, etc, etc., unless we start featuring a true starting RB. IMHO.

Compton was doing a really good job of lead blocking; almost outstanding, even. Every offense in existence benefits from having a good fullback in the game, and that almost starts to look like a great position switch for Compton.

The better question is whether the offense wouldn't have looked worlds better since the season-opening kickoff with Compton in full-time as a protector for the QB, lead blocking on running plays, and coming out of the I or Split Backs formations, using 2 and 3-wide sets out of either the shotgun or under center and using generous play action.

An additionally better question is why the staff stuck so ardently with a play-count rotation at running back instead of a series-to-series rotation, subbing players out only they're when banged up or visibly tired or take themselves out due to fatigue; that ruined the run game more than anything else this season.

Edit: I don't know why I can't write correctly anymore, and I write novels for fun.

@ bob knights liver: I read the entire op, which said "why put a center in as a back when he can't run or catch." I merely pointed out the fact that the center in question made a huge play catching the ball.

So snark this you dumb ****

Their defense held Alabama to14, primarily because alabama ran the ball. Arkansas's defense is more vulnerable to the pass. Look at the misery (Missouri) game. Arky got tired just like they did during the A&M game in the 4th quarter, and their QB sucks.

Now, I like the run blocking plays that arky is doing. I would like to see a mix of some good run blocking from our line, which we did not seem to do well this year, some play action, and some spread mixed in with deep, and check down passes.

Just goes to show you how big of a bust Cam Clear was when we went to a back up center to catch passes. And that's no knock on Compton he should get the Aggie Heart award and also caught both passes thrown to him this year, one for a TD. But come on, man!
