The only dogs in the conversation are

1. Mutts
2. Collies
3. Working dogs such as Dobermans and German Shepherds

I believe the breed standard is 13-16 or 17 inches at the shoulder. However, thats as large as other dog mascots in our conference. They can also be much larger...a friend once had a sheltie that was born to two sheltie parents that ended up being ****ing massive. Way larger than the breed standard.

I support this thread and the OP only because I have a sheltie and I may be biased...

but yes, they are for the most part smaller... I work a lot in the rescue and there are veryyyy large shelties, and vice versa there are veryyyy small collies. The AKC standard for the Shetland Sheepdog is between 13 and 16 inches at the shoulder. The AKC standard for Rough Collies are from 24 to 26 inches at the shoulder and weigh from 60 to 75 pounds.

Here is a picture for comparison.

quote:
Official Standard of the Rough Collie

General Character: The Collie is a lithe, strong, responsive, active dog, carrying no useless timber, standing naturally straight and firm. The deep, moderately wide chest shows strength, the sloping shoulders and well-bent hocks indicate speed and grace, and the face shows high intelligence. The Collie presents an impressive, proud picture of true balance, each part being in harmonious proportion to every other part and to the whole. Except for the technical description that is essential to this Standard and without which no Standard for the guidance of breeders and judges is adequate, it could be stated simply that no part of the Collie ever seems to be out of proportion to any other part.

quote:
Official Standard of The Shetland Sheepdog

General Appearance
The Shetland Sheepdog, like the Collie, traces to the Border Collie of Scotland, which, transported to the Shetland Islands and crossed with small, intelligent, longhaired breeds, was reduced to miniature proportions. Subsequently crosses were made from time to time with Collies. This breed now bears the same relationship in size and general appearance to the Rough Collie as the Shetland Pony does to some of the larger breeds of horses. Although the resemblance between the Shetland Sheepdog and the Rough Collie is marked, there are differences which may be noted. The Shetland Sheepdog is a small, alert, rough-coated, longhaired working dog. He must be sound, agile and sturdy. The outline should be so symmetrical that no part appears out of proportion to the whole. Dogs should appear masculine; *****es feminine.

I had an old college roommate that had a sheltie that used to piss all over the house.

My other college roommate got tired of it would spray the dog down with water and put it in the freezer.

One day he forgot.

We have an older Sheltie; and she's been a wonderful family dog. Her herding instinct was very
strong when young. She would run circles around the kids any time they were playing outside - always trying
to keep them together. Would love to see her around some sheep. She's never even seen one, but I'm quite sure she'd start "working" them right away.

Love em', but there is absolutely NO WAY you even think about changing REV. As one of the most
recognized dogs in the world, it would be like trying to re-brand Scooby Doo by making him look more like
a standard poodle or something.

I'd rather have a noble rescue dog...good pr for the cause of animal rescue

But there's no way we're not going with a collie...way to much invested in licensed merchandise that looks like a collie

My indoor dwelling sheltie went to the lake house for the first time at about 8 months old. She had never seen a cow, or any other animal than a bird, squirrel, or pet animal. As soon as she saw those cows on our land, she herded them all out of the gate by herself. She even stopped at the gate that marked the edge of the property after they went through. I was amazed by her instinctive herding.

As a Sheltie owner and having owned four previous Shelties, uh no. Its not because of their brilliancy, not because there the sixth most smartest dog on the top 10 list of smartest dogs. Its because historically they are a one person dog. Yes they enjoy other home members, but its one person they grow a bond too especially more than others.

Secondly they are notorious barkers more so than just about any other dog, their timid by nature no matter the amount of socialization, their nippers. I take my border collie and my sheltie to Lowes just about every weekend, its not my sheltie who gets all the attention. Its my sheltie who wants to herd shopping carts going by, its my sheltie who gets excited when little sheep (kids) are playing and moving about. They are quirky little dogs with excellent drive, very sensitive emotionally and can have at times very high pray drive. Not exactly a dog I would have as a mascot.

Now size wise I've had breed standards except in two. The first non standard we rescued from a couple in Spring whose kids were allergic to his dander. AKC papers, beautiful markings , great ears and overall a beautiful Sheltie by standards, except size. He was bigger than our Border Collie, on the other hand he was what I would call a canine politician. He never met a stranger he didnt like, never saw a car or truck he didnt want to get into and go riding.

I love Shelties, second only to the Border Collie, but having one as a mascot I just couldn't agree with, stick with the traditional collie.

Now for all of us who love defense, a Belgian Malinois or GS. Great tacklers, love to play defense or offense and can cover a wheel route and play lock down corner.

We've got two Shelties. One is AKC. We think the other is a Collie/Sheltie mix (Celtie) because he's larger, has more of a Collie head, and is more sedate.

When I was a student, I would have loved to have a few classes with a Sheltie for Rev. We never would've finished before the dog started barking. I'm sure we made some mistakes training the damn dog, but she barks more than any dog I've ever had. We put a bark collar on her and she's smart enough to walk around making low growling noises to test what she can get away with. If the collar loosens, she starts yapping.

The damn dog is also the smartest dog we've ever had, but not good smart. She's evil smart. I swear she can reason. She's my daughter's dog. When my daughter comes home from college, the Sheltie pointedly ignores her. She shuns her, turning her back on her for a couple of days as punishment for leaving her. First chance she gets, the dog further punishes my daughter by pooping in front of her door. It's the only time she does stuff like this.

The Sheltie is also high strung and neurotic. Every Sheltie owner I know says their dog is neurotic. Ours goes beserk for foil and trash bags. Just grabbing a box that looks like the foil box (e.g., plastic wrap) will set her off.

Shelties are not supposed to howl. This one does. Often, for no reason than to hear herself, she starts howling. When my wife plays the Irish whistle, the dog tries to match the pitch. When an ambulance siren can barely be heard, she starts making her own siren sound.

The Celtie, on the other hand, isn't the brightest dog, but he's laid back and obedient. I think that's the Collie part of him. Before him, we had another Celtie who was the same way.

I know Rev used to be a Sheltie, but someone along the way made a smart decision by switching breeds. The Collie is better suited for the mascot role. Personally, we're never getting another pure bred Sheltie.
