I had to read their explanation of the play and then watch it loop a few times, but I think I see what they tried to do.. The end of their write-up explains what is happening.
That was a horrible pass.. unless the receiver ran the wrong route..
The left tackle becomes an eligible receiver and just runs a fly route. The pass is intended for him, but he's not anywhere in the picture when that ball is intercepted.. He is way down field, off camera. Either he was supposed to stop or the punter just can't throw very far.
The dead guy becomes an ineligible receiver before the snap, so he can't go down field or else it will be a penalty. So maybe the coaches told him to just fall back after the snap and he took them literally... Way too literally... I can't believe the coaches would tell him to play dead.
Watch the loop and try to see where the left tackle goes. I'm guessing he was covered anyway, but I can't tell from the angles.
