Anybody else think the stadium announcer got a little too theatrical before every Rice 3rd down? I didn't make it to the Lamar game, but I don't recall the stadium announcer being so melodramatic about the opponent's 3rd down attempts in previous years. In years past, the 12th Man seems to know the down and distance and always seems to respond with the appropriate elevation in volume.

Or has the announcer been doing this for a while? I just noticed it last Saturday.

He did it during the Lamar game too. I think this started last year? I don't like it, and think he is trying to start something to where eventually the fans will say it at the same time he does. It sucks.

Started as a "thing" last year. Annoys me more when the team can't get off the damn field on 3rd down. But it's not a major annoyance. A lot more issues with the amateurs running the gameday production before the new 3rd down call.

He's becoming more annoying each week. Not just this Tech schtick he's come up with but for goodness sakes Chace be quiet!!

Who is in charge of that? Serious question. Like the person who said "let's do the THIRD DOWN. Can we get that on the tv?"

In case you haven't figured it out yet, the 3rd Down yell from the PA announcer, the music and fireworks, and most everything else is done, not for the fan, but for the players and recruits. I graduated from A&M almost 20 years ago, so Im definitely not new army. However, I can appreciate that A&M has joined the rest of the programs in the 21st century. Personally, I love the music and fireworks. My problem is right after that. Everyone is pumped up and fired up to play the game, only to have our band slow everything down with the War Hymn. That needs to be done way before the team comes on the field.

I'm new army and I hate it. I'm pretty sure that the players know when it's third down.

The genesis of "it is...third down" goes back to the Auburn game. Frankly, I felt like the 12th Man wasn't as engaged as they should have been for such a big game. It was then that I thought there should be some way to get the crowd going.

It may not be popular with everyone, but look: did you see the atmosphere at freaking Floyd Casey when Baylor played Oklahoma? They played House of Pain's "Jump Around" and all those Baylor Baptists started, well, jumping around. When the atmosphere in Waco feels more electric than Kyle Field, we have a major malfunction on our hands.

As for feedback, I've received mostly positive. There were some Internet critics early on, as well as some folks who follow me on Twitter who didn't like it. The most amusing criticism was from the person who said such catchphrases were unnecessary at Texas A&M. I tweeted back that - based on that logic - "Fightin' Texas Aggie first down" should go away too. But they responded that that was a nice touch. I'm thinking, "Come on, man, you can't have it both ways."

I caught the same Internet grief in 2001 when I started football and 2002 when I started the first down call. You learn to roll with it. Sometimes I wonder how critical some people would be if their job was anonymously criticized on the Internet. But I also understand that new things are often not received well initially. I'm always curious what the Internet folks are saying, so I check the boards quite a bit. It's some of the best free entertainment you can find.

No he doesn't have to try to get anyone to yell. He's the PA announcer. That he's being noticed tells you he's not doing a good job.

I graduated 35 years ago and I'm happy with the changes to the game day presentation we've made. But this guy is just so junior high it's embarrassing.

You are the PA announcer. Announce the game. If the crowd is dead, saying in a downbeat monotone voice "It is.........third down" doesn't do jack s**t to the crowd except make us shake our heads in disbelief.

Stop trying to make yourself a "part" of the game when you are the f-ing PA announcer.

"That's another Baylor Bear first down" was extremely annoying when I saw them play a couple weeks back. I hope to Gawd we don't start doing the same shtick.

Unless he's doing it as reverse psychology. Maybe it'll get everyone on defense so unbelievably pissed off that they'll kill any opposing player just so they don't have to hear it again?

I have no problem with the announcer. It seems like the student section has to be reminded to turn up the volume on third down.
