Game Administration Interference
ARTICLE 5. While the ball is in play, coaches, substitutes and authorized attendants in the team area may not be between the sideline and coaching line or on the field of play.
PENALTYAdminister as a dead-ball foul. First and second infractions: Delay of game for sideline interference, five yards from the succeeding spot. [S21 and S29]
Third and subsequent infractions: Unsportsmanlike conduct for sideline interference, 15 yards from the succeeding spot. Automatic first down for fouls by Team B if not in conflict with other rules. [S27 and S29]

Extension of Periods
ARTICLE 3. a. A period shall be extended for an untimed down if one or more of the following occurs during a down in which time expires (A.R. 3-2-3-I-VIII):
1. A penalty is accepted for a live-ball foul(s) (Exception: Rule 10-2-5-a). The period is not extended if the foul is by the team in possession and the statement of the penalty includes loss of down (A.R. 3-2-3-VIII).
2. There are offsetting fouls.
3. An official sounds his whistle inadvertently or otherwise incorrectly signals the ball dead.
b. Additional untimed downs will be played until a down is free of the circumstances in statements 1, 2 and 3 of Rule 3-2-3-a (above).
c. If a touchdown is scored during a down in which time expires, the period is extended for the try (Exception: Rule 8-3-2-a).

It says penalty is treated as a dead ball foul. Shouldn't the penalty have been assessed on the succeeding kickoff (the start of the second half) rather than playing an untimed down?

consistent with what happened in this game except it was fans and the sideline in the Utah game instead of just the sideline

Doesn't matter anyways. The blocked field goal was not returnable and the whistle should have been blown the second he touched it. Blocked field goal can only be advanced if it lands behind the line of scrimmage. The refs screwed that call in many different ways

Zombie

Tell that to Alabama. I think the rule is if it is behind the line of scrimmage it can't be returned.

Wrong. Wrong. Wrong. Wrong.

It can't be advanced by kicking team. It can by defense.

This is said so matter-of-factly... Which makes it even funnier at how utterly stupid and wrong it is.

A place kick or punt that is blocked or tipped has the exact same rules as one that is not blocked once it is beyond the LOS

Would be nice if on these threads people would first put the disclaimer

"I REALLY AM NOT QUALIFIED TO THROW IN MY 2 CENTS HERE AS I AM NOT COMPLETELY FAMILIAR WITH NCAA RULES CONCERNING THE PLAY IN QUESTION (OR THE FACTS OF THE BAMA/AUBURN RETURN PLAY FOR THAT MATTER). HOWEVER, I DO OFFER THE FOLLOWING COURTESY OF MY HANDS GRABBING THIS FROM MY BACKSIDE:"

Behind the Neutral Zone
ARTICLE 1. a. A scrimmage kick that fails to cross the neutral zone continues in play. All players may catch or recover the ball behind the neutral zone and advance it (A.R. 6-3-1-I-III).
b. The blocking of a scrimmage kick by an opponent of the kicking team who is not more than three yards beyond the neutral zone is considered to have occurred within or behind that zone (Rule 2-11-5).

My only dammed point was the penalty assessment, which is more insight than you others have offered...not that it matters, it's over...yes I know. Just adding to the DISCUSSION, because there are so many obvious D1 officials on here from their easy chair

All I can offer is when playing in high school we had a 97 yard TD run negated by the same penalty.

Penalty was correct call
Enforcement is the question here. Period
vander54
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Since it is a dead ball penalty the TD never happened. The play is dead at the point of the penalty. Right?

So we got the one untimed down.

I hate auto correct

I remember Anagrammatic Nudist being just as adamant, and just as wrong, on the Tine board. He's a legend over there. What was that thread again, AN?

Basic football knowledge vs. thinking 290 SUX is a legitimate personalized plate that the State would allow. Yeah, that's apples to apples. "A legend over there?" Yeah, only in your obsessed mind.

Armani should have waved for a fair catch before fielding the ball. He he done so and been contacted by one of the Rice players, it would have resulted in a red card and 15 minutes in the penalty box. We would have been able to play the entire 3rd Quarter 11 on 10.

How about we get back to the OP question.

1. We can and did return the blocked field goal.
2. Our bench did incur a penalty.

Was the penalty applied correctly?

Everything I can find says it should have been enforced as a dead-ball foul at the succeeding spot, which in our case would have been on the extra point try.

Although, thinking logically if a player from your sideline interferes enough to get in the way of the other team then anything after that shouldn't count. I don't know if we did that though.
