Not deshazor's fault. Howard Matthews again didn't know where to be.

Relax - it was safety checkdowns - they fixed the problem by the end of the game (hence the interception)

Mathews was the real culprit.

I dunno jturner181. I think he just got beat flat out with a bad read on the 2nd touchdown.

1st game. I think we were all expecting some inconsistency and penalties from both sides of the ball. I'm just happy that our defense was mostly consistent and showed growth over the course of the game.

Pengwin - Yes we did get beat in a foot race down the field; which I'm fine with. The safeties are there for this exact reason; provide help over the top.

SC has a couple of the fastest players in the SEC on the outside... I don't mind Everett getting beat down the field (a bit) as long as our safety play is sound.

Not all teams will be able to run like SC can... (LSU, Ole Miss come to mind though)

First touchdown everett was just slower than the guy.

Second was blown coverage.


1 Blown coverage per game is a VAST improvement over last year !

Nevermind we just obliterated the 9th ranked team in their house when we were 10 pt underdogs. Not good enough. It's the FIRST game. I was super pleased with the defensive performance at this point in the season. Confident the staff will adjust and the secondary will get better. Watts is going to be great.

Our secondary play was inconsistent. However, as Jesse Palmer pointed out, there is talent there. We just have to be more consistent.

I think part of the problem last night was that we were keying on their run game, at least in the first half. Matthews was great in run support, but he did bite hard on that first TD.

After pages of back-patting, just wanted to discuss how we can get better. Summy would do the same thing.

Yes he did. I didn:t see th ereplay on the 2nd TD but I was thinking there should hav ebeen safety help on tha tplay when it happened as well.

The positive is they had plenty of trouble running the ball on us and that's a huge change from what we saw last yr v our Western Division opponents. I thought SC would pound us between the tackles and they were not able to.

Someone set a reminder to resurrect this thread in five weeks, when we've had a chance to see more of our games, and more of SC's games.

No one liked seeing 14 points in the 3rd quarter. Never give up, never let up. For lo, if we have no defense again, we're a torn ACL from 4-8.

I think pretty much everyone did, including Synder. Hence why we focused so much on the run.

We do need to work on coverage, although there is room for hope. Watts had two breakups and one int. Burns had a breakup. And that one PI call on Davis was pretty weak imo.

Still, we kept them under 30. I think we all would have taken that going in.

Rewatch the game... the SEC Network had a perfect camera angle on #31 (Howard Matthews) biting on the action on the line and then the receiver dropping into the position Matthews was SUPPOSED to be in for safety support which Everett needed. The first burn TD last night was so very much not Everett's fault. Rewatch the game.

And you should go back and read my post again. I said the 1st one was on Matthews. The SECOND one was on Everett. Cover 3. Safety has the middle of the field. Not the sideline fade. Hth

Everett took the outside guy and Hilliard was supposed to take the inside guy.

Hilliard stopped and the WR just ran down the field. Almost looked like Hilliard expected the WR to come across the middle.

So the WR was open, and Everett came over later BC he was covering the outer WR.

It's missing a "n"

I like how during that one play we rushed the QB. That takes pressure off secondary and makes SC settle for less yardage. SC became predictable and pass happy early.

On another note, those times Garret was double teamed, shouldn't that have freed up someone to do something else? (Make em pay)

You are right on all counts which is why Sumlin said it was a busted coverage. They flooded Everett's zone with two vertical routes Hilliard had underneath covered and Everett was stuck with a two on one situation. (pretty good scheme against cov 3 actually) Only way to stop that is saftey help or have the LB trail tough concept to defend.

I am also concerned with the defense overall. It is obvious that we have a NC caliber offense. It will be frustrating when the D loses a game for us, which unfortunately I think will happen. We are one more defensive heavy recruiting class away from being a playoff contender every year for the next 4-5 years. I am pretty damn excited myself.
