It was "Winning with the Aggie 4-3 Defense." I remember seeing it in my HS coach's office. I remember one key was gang tackling. He wanted to see his whole defense converge and get in on the tackle.

The '75 D was the greatest in A&M history. 10 of the starting 11 played in the pros. They were the precursor to the WC.

DavidWalker, great to hear from you. Great to hear from a person who was there. All true. I was a couple of years older than you but we knew each other. I didn't play football but I stayed busy in another sport.

@David Walker, "MAD DOG" said that '76 team that
kicked Florida's butt in Sun Bowl could spot DUKE 21pts and still beat'em.
Said you were one tough SOB, he said "damn he had to run scout team against our number ones and if our number one o line could'nt pass block, just think what the scout team o-line was like, We beat the dog out of him, yep tough SOB"

Ol' Mad Dog. Sent him and Emory a video I made of us set to Bad to the Bone. He was working with the Cowboys breaking down film, and this was just several years ago. Shocked a lot of us when he didn't get the job when Bellard quit. Hell of a motivator. Instead Coach Wilson was chosen, and he was a great great teacher. The cigars wanted out of the wishbone and so did Tom. Still, Mad Dog woulda been a hell of a head coach at A&M.

Hey David, at the end of the '76 season, I thought y'all could have beaten any team in the country. Also, the methodical crushing of the sips that year still brings great joy.

Mike Mosley was the prototypical wishbone quaterback and replaced Sr. Walker in his freshman year. Fast as lightning and very athletic. Also ran high hurdles for the track team. Fastest white boy I ever saw.

This. Mosley would hit a hole and he was off to the races. I've never seen a white guy that fast since then. I've told this a few times, but I have the Dave Campbell Texas Football from 1980 with he and Singletary on the cover in a frame at my office.

Good to hear from you David!!! As a kid I watched you and Mike and wanted to be a QB, but wound up playing CB. Did you play against Marty Akins when he was QB at TU or was that a little before your time?

I was really proud of how Mike picked up the offense his freshman year. His 180 yards vs USC in the Bluebonnet proved that. Speed to burn and sharp too. Texted with him today and with George Woodard on the 1st. Both doing well. Sure coulda used big Woo in'78. Akins? Yep, 3 years worth. Played golf with him, ultra competitive. Personal injury lawyer who's done well. He came into the 75 game with a bum knee and left during the 1st series. They beat us when I was a fish and didn't attempt a single pass. Wishbone. :-)

Marty's nephew of course is Drew Brees. Drew's Mom committed suicide during the preseason the year the Saints won the Super Bowl.

Do recall the initial pre-season visit by Bellard to Aggie Park in SA. I asked a question about "passing out of the weishbone" and he and Dee Powell patiently answered the question.

We were play action predicated on a DB reacting to the run. After my frosh season they went to the Jets and installed a version of Namath's dropback scheme, tailored to a one-wide receiver set, but same principles and reads. It was 'revolutionary' for wishbone teams of the day. We ran 4 routes out of it.

You can order Coach Bellard's book "Wishbone Wisdom: Emory Bellard: Texas Football Visionary" on Amazon for $16 or Kindle for $10. One of the last times I saw him before his death was at a book signing on campus surrounding a Letterman's Reunion and the Spring Game. One of the great gentlemen of the game.

David, thanks. I know all about Marty, Drew etc. I played football for his dad/grandpa, Coach Akins. One tough mother...he still lives in Franklin and could probably still kick a lot of ass if needed. Marty's missed XP in the 71' state final is still talked about back at home...

For what it's worth, in '91 we interviewed Bellard for a Batt feature on him when I was sports editor. The reporter asked him what he thought of the Run-And-Shoot, and Bellard dismissed it as just the wishbone with the two backs split wide. I always found that interesting. The feature ran sometime during the summer.
