This. It was real popular in Louisiana back in the day. You had northeast, northwest, southeast and southwest. Then, they rolled them all into the 'University of Louisiana' system and slapped the town they are located in on the end of University of Louisiana.

The best examples I can think of are Michigan,Illinois, and Missouri:

For me, it also applies when you have to qualify where you went to school (by naming a direction or city) after you tell them the name of the university program.

i.e.:
University of Alabama at Birmingham
UT Arlington
Texas A&M Kingsville

recently UT-Austin (LOL - Sliver)

Teams that have a direction in their name and are from a smaller conference

Central michigan
Eastern michigan
North texas
Western kentucky

It can also encompass schools like Louisiana monroe and Louisiana lafayette that have their specific location as part of the school name
