Did we really dislocate both of Ty Detmers shoulders in the 1990 Holiday Bowl?

I think so and it looks that way from the video clips but I am not sure if this is just a legend or if it really happened. Anyone?

Its been a while but I believe the defense dislocated both shoulders and did something to an elbow. I think the defense dislocated his non-throwing shoulder first. I remeber the announcers stepping all over themselves praising how brave he was to come back into the game after he had an injury. Seems like it was one or two plays later that he was cruchned again and left the game for good. I, for one, did not want to see him get injured but was glad the defense beat the crap out of him for his pre-game comments.

Yep. Other Ags can correct me if I'm mistaken, but I think he was taken out of the game for a few plays or a couple of series, then came back in and we lit him up again! I don't remember who it was that said it, but someone at BYU prior to the game was talking pretty serious smack. Something like they were offended they "had" to go to the Holiday Bowl and they were "forced" to play the Ags.

I just wished other Aggie teams of the '90s and '00s could have taken other things that happened as seriously! I just wonder if the '90 Holiday Bowl bothered Slocum so much that he never allowed himself to prepare his players to hit hard and essentially run up the score. Any thoughts?

Yes, it was both shoulders. My wife, who was a customer service rep at BCBSTX at the time, handled the phone call from the doctor's office requesting verification of Ty's insurance coverage.

why was a texas insurance company called?

How long do you want to ignore this user?
Maybe he was covered under his dad's insurance from Texas. However, I don't quite buy that story. I am pretty sure D-1 athletic departments are covered by their own insurance. When I messed up some teeth on the 12th Man, they sent me to the doctor and got me fixed up and I never had to show any type of insurance proof.

In the week leading up to the Holiday Bowl, the BYU head coach made comments like they deserved to face better team than A&M, a team more worthy to be on the same field with BYU. Probably the one and only time RC ran up the score. I remember seeing the BYU coach fuming after the game, insulted that we didn't call off the dogs.... geez what did he expect after saying what he did?!

It happened.
The day after the rout we were staying in the same hotel as the BYU team.I saw Detmer in the lobby signing autographs and got his on my extra ticket. One shoulder was in a sling and the other didn't move as he signed with only his fingers moving. It was hard to keep a straight face while he signed.

One of my buddies (and an attorney here in Dallas) was one of Detmer's backups. He said that everyone on the bYu sidelines was screaming because they thought we were trying to hurt him. I always tell him that if he'd have been a better QB Detmer would've only lost one shoulder!

Great game!

Awesome licks- gotta hand it to Ty for standing in there. Sweet victory!

Always wondered how poor Ty took care of business w/ both shoulders out of action- zippers and such...

This was a huge game. This was the only year during my time in Aggieland that we lost to the sips and Edwards talking smack prior to the game about what a great BYU team he was bringing to San Diego made the victory sweet.

RC going for the throat helped take the sting of getting outscored by only one in Austin. Also, Edwards having a melt-down on the sideline after Bucky caught a pass was classic.

Let's hope we can see a similar performance from Reggie in a bowl during his career.

The Detmer family probably doesn't like A&M very much considering in 1995 we did the same thing to their son Coy.
Bockaneer
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Yeah, but after we busted Coy up, his b/u came in and won the game for the 'buffs... not nearly as satisfying as demolishing BYU.

The Pavlas to Bucky pass was way cool, we might have gotten past Tx if we had showed some of that originality during the season. Bucky at qb- run, Pavlas in- Ags r gonna throw: Agony just remembering.

Will NEVER forget seeing the picture (in the paper I believe) of one of our linebackers standing by Ty looking down at him face down, unable to lift himself up because of his shoulders.

Let's get back to those days boys. Leave 'em psycologically crushed and in a "general state of disrepair".

Ahh yes let's not forget Andre Ware sobbing like a pinched 4 year old on the sidelines in Kyle Field.

That game was the best execution of Texas A&M's offense and defense I've ever seen. BYU was talking smack as soon as this matchup was announced. They had been undefeated and ranked in the top 3 until a loss at Hawaii, right around the same time Detmer was named Heisman Trophy Winner. BYU fell about 10 spots, and A&M was either unranked or in the 23,24 something spot. Detmer, the other players, and good ol' LaVell Edwards were saying if not for the Hawaii loss they could be playing for the Nat. Champ. etc, and thought they deserved a higher ranked opponent. A&M didn't like that and they came out swinging. We did use several trick plays, and I think everyone of them worked (i.e. Bucky catching a touchdown). One of my friends who was on the team at the time said they had practiced several trick plays throughout the year and never got the chance to use them. When we were spanking BYU by 20 or so, RC started throwing these plays in and BYU could not stop us. The Wrecking Crew - Kevin Smith, WIlliam Thomas, etc. had several memorable plays as well.

oh well, Just another sign it was time to go I guess.

How long do you want to ignore this user?
Yes, true. The Crew was not trying to hurt Detmer, just playing some real mean-ass hard hittin' WC style D, the plays he got hurt on were clean hits. The back-up did not fare much better. Of course Lavell was upset, we threw a RB pass for a TD up by 35! And when Lance came in we kept throwing. Of course, that game was won by the WC and the viscous head splitting blocks of the Bull clearing the way for Tank, and Bucky's legs and arm, people forget how good of a QB he was his last 2 years. Never will you see a better display of the FB position than in that game, all incoming Aggie FBs should be forced to watch that game to see Robert "Bull" Wilson show you how the position is to be played.

Both Lavell and the BYU players lamented the fact they had to play us, thought they were more deserving of a better opponent than a 7-5 or 8-4 A&M team, well, they asked for it, and they got it!

My dad talks about that game sometimes. I am gonna go look at the copy in cushing's special collections video section monday, hopefully. They were closed today. I have seen the highlight reel, but would love to see the whole game played out. Does anyone happen to have any of the comments on video from both byu and A&M figures? That would be hilarious to watch!

i remember BYU really being disgusted that they had to lower themselves to play A&M. A&M was unworthy to play the mighty cougars and their heisman trophy winner.

65 -14 Ags doesn't even begin to describe the carnage that both the Aggie O and D shared with the cougars. it is hard to find a better linebacker and D-backing corps in the history of the wrecking crew.

I just watched the BYU video...I'd forgotten how exciting that game was...just pure carnage by the WC and Bucky and Crew ate the Cougars up like a starving man on a Christmas ham [/Remember the Titans]

That was the first era of Aggie football I really remember and I remember why I loved it so much. My oldest sister was at A&M and I just fell in love with A&M football and everything that this place stood for.

I sure would like to see Reggie and Crew carve up opposing defenses like that. That would make me one happy happy Ag!

After the game Lavell was nowhere to be found at the traditional handshake at midfield. R C wandered around looking for him for a few minutes and finally gave up. The sad thing was the number of times they showed Ty's Mother wringing her hands on the sidelines.

I went to my recruiting file and came up with a copy of an article someone sent me about the byu game printed in the san diego union. while papers around here talked about us running up the score, out in san diego they talked about how lavell got some of his own medicine, how detmer stayed in the game until the end with margins 47, 43 35 and 31 points, and how lavell was know for running up the score throughout his career.
they also mentioned Detmenr's two dislocated shoulders. i remember watching that game and can't remember a game where we had more people in their backfield on a consistent basis than their offense did. detmer was running for his life the entire time he was in the game!

Completely different deal. Koy's was a noncontact injury. He was rolling out and his ACL exploded. We didn't touch him.

Because he was busy chasing down our OC (Toledo?) and called him a sonofa***** on camera as he was walking away. That grumpy old man got his ass handed to him that day. Great stuff.

Two questions:

How many sacks or TFLs did the Wrecking Crew have?

What were Bucky's stats?

Yep, it was Bob Toledo...and Edwards was clearly pissed at what Bob had to say. Lavell just threw his hands down in disgust.

What do you tell him with a straight face after completely humiliating his squad like that?

Darren Lewis through that pass to Bucky. Pavlass handed one off to him that he ran in for a TD.
