Curious-what are the differences? I noticed there are 2 different 5A playoff brackets?

School size. 5A 1 takes the two schools from a district with the most students while the other two play in 5A 2.

Unless the system has changed in the last few years

Div 1 is larger school enrollment
Div 2 is slightly smaller

It is kind of odd. I went to an avg size 4a school. Some years we went to the playoffs as div 1 and some years we went as div 2. It just depended on what other schools made the playoffs from our division.

It is an additional attempt to turn high school sports into "fun fair positive sports" where everybody gets a ribbon and gets to say they were "in the playoffs". Some districts only have maybe 8 teams and half of them make the playoffs. My kids district here in Katy only had 6 teams a few years back before adding Memorial and Strake Jesuit. So - you had to work hard, prepare, do well and finish in the TOP 66% in the district. Only 2 teams did not make the playoffs!!! A BIG JOKE and farce. UIL wanting to dumb down the playoffs to be "inclusive", I guess. ONE TEAM was in the playoffs when I was in high school. Yeah, yeah, I know - it's back when dinosaurs roamed the earth!!!

They didn't do it to be inclusive, they do it because the UIL gets 15% of every playoff game's gate revenue. 5A D1 and D2 make sense because the D2 schools can be half the size of the D1. 4A and down it doesn't make any sense.

It's absurd. The "Big School/Small School" division is meaningless, as they are divided up at the district level. The first three years this playoff structure was in place, the "Small School" winner had larger enrollments than the supposed "Big School" winner.

The UIL has a lot of excuses why they've implemented the format (and introduced similar in the lower divisions) but it all comes down to $$. Pretty much the same reason why we have 35 (!) bowl games this year.

Just add a 6A classification and reshuffle the schools and be done. The two champs per classification is silly.

It take the meaning away from every champion except the 5A D1 school. The D2 school champ might actually be better, but we'll never know. The 5A champion used to be the best team in the state. Who knows who that is now.

Here's a novel idea. Why not have the div. 1 finalist play div. 2 finalist for a true 5a champ?

I guess I hsould have added it was a money grab by the UIL, but still the same idea. Still, no clear cut champion.

Would it make anyon happy if they changed the name fron 5A big schol to 6A.

They already voted/approved a 6A classification.

Old ---- New
6 Man = 1A
1A = 2A
2A = 3A
3A = 4A
4A = 5A
5A = 6A

I'm sure they will change the cutoff numbers in the future. But as of next year (I think) this is how it will look.

At first I was going to say this won't work because the distance between schools of top enrollment, I'm thinking somewhere around 2,750 to split 5A in half, will be too far from each other to economically justify adding another division. However after looking at the numbers, other than west Texas, it seems somewhat feasible.

I'm not sure how this would change how school districts plan growth, I suppose it shouldn't since athletics shouldn't be the main factor regarding growth.

Adding 6A wont do much.
The UIL would just add 6A division 1 and division 2 and we would just add 2 more state champions.
Currently every classification has a D1 and D2 and a state champion for each division. .. Even 6 man

Sabreman hit in on the head. This is about money. If it was about fair competition, then would would go up to at least the 8A level in Texas. The worst examples are in the 3 level. A school like Huntington that should be in 2a is playing Jasper in district.

The difference is one.

II - I = I

Sorry, couldn't help myself. Besides being an engineer, I had the zoo's rep to uphold.
