Per Wiki-
quote:
A Bearcat is another name for the Binturong, a viverrine mammal from Southeast Asia.

I don't trust any East Texas school who'd pick a Southeast Asian mammal that resides in Red China's backyard as a mascot.
Sound like a bunch of commies to me.

It's on like Binturong.

F8F Bearcat - one badass plane that came out too late for WWII. The Blue Angels flew them for awhile.

Legend has it that Sam Houston had a rampant bear problem on campus about 100 years ago. They tried everything to eradicate the bears... but nothing seemed to work. Finally, one bright Genetics student begin experimenting on a new breed of cat that would track down and kill the bears. These cats were let lose on the campus and would stop at nothing to attack and devour the bears. Soon, all the bears on campus were gone and the cats came to be known as "bearkats" (not to be confused with bearcats). If you visit the campus, you can still find bearkats roaming the campus... although, they are smaller and much less fierce.

A bearcat is a Grumman-built piston engined Naval fighter built in the waning years of World War II, intended as a replacement for the F6F Hellcat but saw little action during the war.

I found it amusing that the athletic teams were called "The Normals" until the mid 1920s.

As loyal Bearkats, we are often asked just what a Bearkat is. Sometimes we give the wrong answer, according to George W. Lantrip, an alum who now works as a research staff member for the Brooks City-Base, formerly Brooks Air Force Base, in San Antonio.

Before we get to Lantrip's comment, one thing must be understood. The best evidence is that the Sam Houston mascot, the "Bearkat," was never intended to be patterned after a real animal.

CRA, unfortunately the Bearcat in that pic was lost last spring when it crashed on takeoff taking its legendary pilot with it. RIP Howard Pardue.
