I think as late as '01 we were still using the old-school guns. Didn't know they ever changed. I don't think the weight distribution could be changed too much. Hellbent?

nothing wrong with talking about the Silver Taps team. I understand that they focus is for the student, but they are out in public and known to everyone. I would place Silver Taps Bugler as a much more secretive position.

FDT came in second overall at Tulane their first year back, but they won first place in every category but inspection. Since then they've won it almost every year. And RV's can't drill for sh**.

I do not know when they stopped using real 1903 Springfields. The ones we used (back in the 60's had the bores plugged and were chromed or nickel plated. I was in the quad a few years ago and examined one of the rifles that being used by an RV. I was amazed to see it was a fake rifle. They look pretty authentic at a distance. It was quite a bit lighter than a real "03 which weighs slightly over 8-1/2 lbs unloaded. My intent is not to demean the RV's, but I am disappointed that the rifles aren't real. I also wonder what happened to all the M-1 Garands that we had back then. Each dorm had a rifle room full of them and everyone was issued a rifle that was used for Saturday drill. These were rifles that were not demilled - ready to load and fire. I sill have my rifle card with the serial no. on it.

Hellbent, don't know when you attended but when I arrive in the fall of '73, the only arms room was for the FDT and none of the rifles were operational. The RVs kept their rifles in their rooms and they were not operation either. The only operation rifles I saw while I was there were the M-14s (kept in the Trigon) we used for training, other then the .22's we used for marksmanship training. At that time both the FDT and RVs used actual 1903A3 Springfields for their drills.

The 12 members of the taps team are not allowed to wear the identification ribbon unless they are going to a Silver Taps ceremony.

a rifle is not a gun so it's technically not a 21 gun salute.

Correct. At Muster and Silver Taps, the Ross Volunteers fire three volleys.

I have a question: how many guy are in the RV? 21? And are they selected or volunteer?

Well I guess that was more than one. Lol. Silver taps is my favorite Aggie tradition. I think it is awesome that you honor fallen students. When I lived here in the 90 s I got the Silver taps Christmas ornament cause I respected that tradition the most.

The RV's are not ment to compete with the FDT. The FDT is a drill team, that's what they do. We RV's knew, and even talked about how much better they were than us. We only learned a few drills, never to compete against another drill team, only to show, at Conroe, the Bryan Christmas parade, the King Rex parade and then the spring cadet reviews. The FDT is a competition group.

The "Actives" are the current juniors and seniors that go to practice every week. There are 72 juniors selected every year by the new seniors, and 72 seniors, but only a hand full of those are "active"

Real Bad!

I was not in the FDT, but talking to one of my buddies who was stated that the USMC did not care for how the Marine Corps was portrayed in the film, so they did not grant the Film access to the Marine Silent Drill Squad.

At a loss for a drill squad, they contacted A&M and The AFFDTM Provided a Squad for Filming. (No fish were in the movie)

A few good men was definitely performed by FDT. I helped my buddy drink away his paycheck.

I'm sure these guys will appreciate that when they are firing volleys for you.

One thing you Corps haters should realize is that rifle volleys and "Taps" are military honors. To have them at your funeral, you must be entitled to them by virtue of your military service. All Aggies who pass are honored with "Taps" and volleys, whether at Silver Taps or at Muster. The RVs and buglers perform this service for you, by virtue of your being an Aggie. They do this out of respect for you and for Texas A&M. And they pay a significant price--years of effort and sacrifice--for the privilege of honoring you.

Good post, EVA3. I understand the resentment of some, and the appreciation us others. I'm on the appreciation side, but, again, I understand and get the other side, too. I say let's appreciate the Corps for the great things they do, and if we have legitimate beef, then let's address that, too, in a respectful manner.

I've seen 'em play since way back when
And they've always had the grit.
I've seen 'em lose and I've seen 'em win
But I've never seen 'em quit.

Great post EVA3! I bet this guy has never been to Muster or a Silver Taps, but that's OK his loss.

12? Unless the makeup has changed there are 8 members...6 trumpeters and 2 directors made up of 2 sophomores, 2 juniors and 4 seniors. The secretive nature didn't start until the late 90's...before then members always wore the ribbon and were openly known.

Cav all the way baby. Just like the RVs, minus all of the pretentiousness.
