Too young to know the details of his recruitment.

what made him switch last minute?

Someone saw him in his school hallway and started singing the War Hymn or something like that and he claims it caused him to flip on a dime and choose LSU.

It had nothing to do with the load of cash he was given....
Even when we dabbled in illegal recruiting, we couldn't come close to their standards of unethical behavior.

Was told it was a cheerleader humming the war hymn while passing him in the hallway on his way to the announcemnet ceremony....I'll show these folks..Oh, what could have been. Great rb.

Wouldn't have mattered. Had HW gone to A&M, he would have sat on the bench behind Darren Lewis.

$250,000 flipped him, we called it the Louisiana Purchase

That was the Lance Pavlas and Percy Waddle year. With Harvey, it would have been 3 top recruits.

Somewhere down that same list was a guy named Bucky Richardson.

Hempstead Harvey, I remember him well.

We played against Lance Pavlas a couple times in the state playoffs, wasn't he from Huntsville..or maybe Tomball?

Waddle was from Columbus wasn't he?

Wow, funny how that recruiting class turned out...

Tomball and Columbus.

Gig 'em, FAST FRED '65.

Story I always heard - lived in CS going to HS at the time - was that he was not happy that, growing up in Hempstead, everyone expected him to be an Aggie, and he felt like he was being pressured into it. He wanted to make his own way, forge his own path, and it's possible that the cheerleader in the hallway humming the War Hymn was the last straw. (I had not heard about the cheerleader thing, until reading this thread, though.)

I've seen 'em play since way back when
And they've always had the grit.
I've seen 'em lose and I've seen 'em win
But I've never seen 'em quit.

Him being a mental giant, proudly declared that; "I am going to play football for L$U University." At that point I was elated he went to L$Who...where he was a complete head case and was strongly persuaded to leave early.

Seriously, did he have any success at LSU? He left and I never heard about him again.

Yes, he was a good RB for LSU.

But ac is right, Darren Lewis was better.

He was frighteningly good. He had injury issues. He was a very different back than Darren Lewis. I prefer Lewis' productivity, but the pure flat-out SPEED of a healthy Williams was not something that anybody really knew what to do with. He played well for Oakland, but, again, injuries. Scary good when healthy, but often not healthy.

Darren Lewis was one of my favorite RBs of all time. He was just an a$$ kicker, and he also had great OLines in front of him. Like all backs, he was much better when paired with a decent/good passing game, which, unfortunately, did not happen enough while we cheered for him at A&M, during that period.

he wouldn't have started in front of D. Lewis...unfortunately the wacky weed cost him from a longer NFL career.

sorry...it was the snow...not the weed

It was not a cheerleader signing the War Hymn, trust me, I know for a fact...and yes, it's first hand info.

OkcityAg, Williams was at LSU for 5 seasons. That is not leaving early.

AggieDisaster, does your info jive with what I said above, sans the cheerleader stuff? Are there extra details you can add?

Here's an article from the Chronicle written just before signing day in 1986.

Besides A&M, his other choices were Iowa, Nebraska, ASU, Northwestern

LSU wasn't even one of his top 5!

Harvey williams made All SEC his senior year, while Darren Lewis was an All American. HW rushed for 2800 yards while Lewis had over 5000.

and besides that great Oline, never forget The Bull - Robert Wilson. One of the greatest blocking backs I ever saw in college.

Heard from a guy from Hempstead that when Harvey and the qb from Hempstead were here on a recruiting trip the a&m qb at the time said he was the bmoc and told Harvey not to come here. Seems implausible but so does changing your mind because someone sang a song.
