Wasn't that NG from Silsbee the same guy who won the gold in the discus or shot or midget toss or something?

And then didn't he "wrestle" in the WWF as Sexual Chocolate?

That's his brother. He was an Olympic weightlifter in '92 and '96. Didn't win a medal, though.

Finished up HS at Hardin-Jefferson in Sour Lake. I don't remember any football players coming out while I was there.

FullDraw, what year did you graduate Forest Park?

If you're talking from the Triangle, there was also Bubba Smith and his brother(I think), Joe Washington, Jerry Levias(I think), also a guy that played D-line for San Diego that I think went to French; can't remember his name now.

Ricks, TE with Detroit is from Anahuac...

A few of the ones I remember from the Golden Triangle were Spencer George from Hamshire-Fannett and played for the Oilers and Titans, Shockmain Davis(from PA Lincoln)with the Patriots, Robert Giblin from Port Neches-Groves with the New York Giants, and Jeff "The Jet" Bergeron from Port Neches-Groves who played for the Seattle Seahawks I believe.

Putting Bubba Smith, Bum Phillips, and Janis Joplin on the cover of the Golden Triangle phone book was the classiest thing I have ever seen.

Does anyone remember Tony Cleaveland? He ended up at Geirgia I think. Not sure if he ever made the NFL or not.

Presently a Fannett resident...grew up across the border in Sulphur, LA, of most recent Aggie acclaim as home of Andy Vincent, former OL at TAMU.

I've kept up with the SETX football climate since birth, and I've always said that the Golden Triangle is a silver if not gold mine of talent. Played my first game ever against LCM. Still can't see why Lamar can't support a football program.

And if memory serves me correctly, Tracy Bird (now of no consequence athletically, but a darn fine musician and a helluva fisherman) played for Vidor High.

There was a time when the Beaumont area was dubbed "The Professional Football Capital of The World". Believe it or not. Kind of bizarre, but there was a very high per capita # of pros from the area.

Oh yeah, on the other front, Tracy Bird (mentioned above), Mark Chestnut, Clay Walker, George Jones, Janis Joplin, The Big Bopper, the Winter Bothers all hail from the "Beaumont area".

I remember Jerry Ball at WB, he also played FB, they keep showing a highlight every couple of years of a 70 yd TD run against Nederland where he runs over half the defense even stepping on some guys chest.

Hey I thought you guys might find this kinda funny. How many of you guys remember the movie The Sandlot? If so there is the part where the main character Smalls is embarrased b/c his mom knew who Babe Ruth was and he didn't.

Anyway, I was talking to my mom about the earlier post about Beaumont having so many people go to the NFL. And she says yea at one time we used to be known as "the Football Capital of the World." Yea I kinda felt like Smalls then, b/c I had just heard of this.

Lumberton here (Pine Island Bayou boy):

Terrence Kitchens (pk for the Ags). I think he is the only Lumberton guy to play for the Ags.

I noticed someone mentioned Spencer George from Hamshire Fannett - I was friends with him as we both ran hurdles back in the day. He didn't get much pt in the pros because he backed up the "other" George in Tennessee.

Port Neches-Groves
Yes, Dustin Long is from Port Neches-Groves, he led us to the state championship game against Stephenville in 1999 where we lost a close game to coach Art Briles and his son Kendall (who is now a FS for the sips).

I've always found the Orange / B-CS "connection" interesting.

I'm a native of College Station. My wife is from Orange, WO-S '79 and a classmate of Van Barnett who played football at A&M. We live in B-CS now. My brother in law coaches at PN-G.

My late uncle was a native of Orange, and was head of the Animal Science Dept. at A&M for 28 years.

R.C. Slocum is from Orange, lives here, as does one of his best friends who is an Orange native and who is the father of RC's daughter in law, who also lives here.

Last year I met a member of the Stark family, who lived in Pebble Creek at the time.

Additionally, over the years I've met and become friends with about a dozen other Orange natives who live in B-CS. Kinda strange considering Orange has a population of only around 22,000.
