Who cares if the corps isn't as pervasive as it used to be at A&M. Old Sarge is cool, and I seriously doubt that anyone is deciding whether to come to A&M because they like or dislike our logo. The fact is that it is something that could be used to make the University and the Athletic Department money, because most males (those that have a pair), think he is cool and will buy stuff with his image on it.

Girls and metro's will continue to buy pastel colored, beveled ATM, T-shirts, etc. and that will be fine with me. At least it is A&M gear and not butt crusty brown t.u. crap.

I am pro whatever it takes to make the University more CASH so we can continue to compete with the money machine in Austin.

apparently it's the non-gay manliness that the folks in this thread pine for Ol' Sarge to restore!

I'm a non-reg and a fan of Ol sarge. I don't buy the fact he's only liked by cadets and that he went away cause of a less pervasive corps.

HBCanine08: He's the generic white-guy-showing teeth logo. Apparently, maroon-out isn't the only thing we're copying from NU, now we have Herbie Husker sans hat.

Need to see him jumping a green ninja motorcycle over a bus to decide if that is or is not vanilla ice

In the decade of the '50s, the Corps averaged in the high-3000s-to-low 4000s in size, with an overall College enrollment of 6200-7200 range. The gap between Corps participation and overall College enrollment slowly grew untilm in the fall of '64, the Corps represented approximately 38% of the enrollment of 8,339.

How did the campus have so many non-corpsmen in the early 60's before the school officially opened up to regular civilians? Is this all WW II veterans?

Ol' Sarge has been reassigned to serve as special advisor to the president.

My dad is class of ’53… Returning veteran, had no interest in perusing any further military career – had no interest in being in the corps.

If us trying to make an Ol' Sarge mascot ends up looking like the SDSU mascot, I say let's just leave it alone.

I have always kind of like the Nebraska mascot though, and could see an Ol' Sarge version looking really cool.

Regarding the question of the number of civilian students in the late 50's and early 60's... it was a function of three factors:

1. The Corps was not mandatory for fish and sophs between 1954-1958. After 1958 it became mandatory again until the fall of '65. Remember, veterans with active duty service could go to school on the GI Bill ANYTIME... it wouldn't surprise me to learn that in the mid-to-late '50s you still had a bunch of WWII vets that decided to go back to school after they came home, got married, maybe even worked a job or two.

2. Korean War veterans returned to the state and went to A&M on the GI Bill, just like the WWII vets did. If they had active duty service time, they were exempt from participation in the Corps.

3. The efforts in the 50's and 60's to grow the graduate studies side of the College did make somewhat of a difference in the number of civilian students on campus.

Inthe 50's (when my dad was there) continuing thru until the mandatory enrollment in the Cops was changed, Juniors and seniors did not have to remain in the Corps. They lived on campus and were still considered upperclassmen by fish and sophmores. Dad said they were some of the worst hazers.

Being a CT for 4 years and a Non-Reg for 3 years while in vet school in the 70's, the "Corps vs Non-Reg" argument should be a moot point. Was I less of an Aggie being an "Non-Reg"? Hell No!

The Corps makes A&M unique and they are the 'Keepers of the Spirit". The neat thing is, IMHO, is that for nearly 50 years with Corps membership being voluntary, we are still considered the "Best student section in college football". Without the support of Non-Regs, we would not have this distinction.

Regardless of whether you are in the Corps or are not in the Corps, Ol' Sarge is still a bad ass symbol.

I'd be willing to bet that most non-regs think Ol' Sarge is a cool icon/mascot.

Non-reg here, and I certainly miss Ol' Sarge. He WAS the most memorable symbol of A&M when I was a kid.

I miss Ole Sarge. I grew up associating Ole Sarge to A&M, and loved the symbol. I miss seeing it everywhere.

I do have Ole Sarge on my necklace though.

I absolutely love that logo above... Ol' Sarge over the "T" with "Texas Aggies". If it's not the best logo we've ever had, it's real close.

I have a wall plaque with that logo that I got years ago, back in the late '60s or early '70s... my son '13 has it now, hanging in his room.

Wish we could get shirts with this logo, or hats. I'll bet anyone a steak dinner that they'd sell like hotcakes....
