It seems like I never see any Ol' Sarge Aggie merchandise anymore. Does anyone know why?

The head office put him in a vault. If you wanna use Sarge on something you have to pay a crazy amount.

They don't want him around.

Why? Because people don't think he is P.C.?

Thanks to Vision 2020, Ol Sarge is now an Unperson.

He's my favorite A&M related logo. They redesigned him, which means they made the logo worse.

Here's the good O'l Sarge logo:

It's because Aggieland Outfitters/Inspirations was a) banned from using Ol' Sarge and then b) Inspirations was taken over by a homo who loves Ed Hardy and Affliction.

Old Army doesn't want to hear it, but Ol' Sarge doesn't represent A&M anymore.

The Corps will always be an important part of our history and our future, but unlike the in past, the Corps is no longer 100% what A&M is about.

We are coming up shortly on the 50th anniversary of Corps membership becoming voluntary at A&M. 50 years! In that time, Corps membership has proportionally shrunk from 100% of the student body to less than 5% today.

You can debate the merits of it, but A&M does not believe that best way to recruit the 95% of students who won't be in the Corps is to put the Corps and symbols of the Corps like Ol' Sarge as the public face of the university.

But look at it like this, if you old Army types had your way and A&M never changed, you'd have an awesome, Red Ass A&M College ...that was 7K students and the Texas equivalent of the Citadel, playing in the Southland conference and enjoying our new rivalry against TXST!

We don't acknowledge it of course, and still sing about "tu" who plays us out of pity for an easy, 50 point win every few years (hard to compete with a school 7 times the size of yours) but most feel the series will not continue unless we agree to move the game to Reliant because tiny, 35K Kyle Field can't accommodate their fans anymore.

We tell ourselves it doesn't matter, but the truth is, we can't compete with them or any of the other SWC schools anymore because they are all 2-5 times larger than us and have lots more money because Army officers don't make crap.

But we showed them all by keeping the Corps mandatory and Old Army in charge! The Nicholls State Colonels are highly jealous of our Old Sarge logo as all they have is a wimpy officer for their mascot!

I got my own ole sarge tee shirt. I bought my mom those embroidery cds, and a 5 dollar maroon shirt is a cool ole sarge tee thanks to her sewing machine.

Sources tell me that Johnathan Gray likes Ol' Sarge as the logo. If we bring him back, we might have a chance.

Most idiotic thing I've heard in a while. What the hell sense does any of that make? AO does what A&M licensing does, as does every other store who sells A&M merchandise. Why single them out or whoever runs inspirations? Seriously, you're a moron.

No one is banned from using him, just hard to get him licensed.

But all that said, I am a fan of Ol Sarge

I wouldn't mind seeing a big head ol'sarge mascot roaming the sidelines next to the dance team at Kyle Field. Still not sure why a dance team can't co-exist with yell leaders.

Although the corps has changed drastically over the last 50 years, they are still a part of the university and its history. It would be nice to have a recognizable mascot that people associate with A&M. 1) Ol Sarge, 2) Rev

Good lord, that is just plain dumb. That would be like tu getting rid of bevo because they do not actually have ANY agriculture classes, so let's get rid of it.

In a related item, as a wee lad, back in the late 30's, I had a cousin that was the first relative to attend A&M. When he came home, he would regale us young squirts with stories about a character called "Fish Blotto". (Like "Ole Sarge", would guess "Blotto" has also disappeared without a trace).

For the record...

The last time A&M had a completely military student body (with few exceptions due to physical ability, prior service, or nationality) was at the end of WWII. Beginning in the fall of 1945, the veterans returning from WWII and choosing to attend A&M were exempt from participation in the Corps if they had prior active duty service. Although there were some of those vets who chose to be cadets because they wanted to pursue a commission, the great majority of them attended A&M as civilian students. This was the first time (beginning in the fall of '45, and really catching steam in 1946) that civilian students made up a sizable portion of the A&M student body. In the decade of the '50s, the Corps averaged in the high-3000s-to-low 4000s in size, with an overall College enrollment of 6200-7200 range. The gap between Corps participation and overall College enrollment slowly grew untilm in the fall of '64, the Corps represented approximately 38% of the enrollment of 8,339.

In the fall of '65 Corps participation became optional for fish and sophomores, and the gap between Corps participation and civilian enrollment widened further... not so much because the Corps was shrinking but because so many more students were coming to A&M and choosing the civilian path. In the fall of '69 the Corps enrollment was only 238 cadets less than in the fall of '64... but civilian enrollment had grown by 5,933 students.

My point to the earlier poster is that A&M hasn't been a 100% military student body since before WWII. The idea that all Aggie students wore uniforms until the late '60s in wildly inaccurate.
