I just find it so strange.

I thought about it because of the Christmas lights thread. Even when a fellow Ag does something red ass like put "saw em off" on his roof in lights people get all butt hurt about it.

"Saw'em Off" is an invention of Aggieland Outfitters. Saw'em Off is NOT a Texas A&M brand. Ever wonder why Saw'em Off shirts never use A&M trademarks? Instead they use dumb phrases like "Homeland of the Maroon and White". I would have to guess it's because the A&M marketing department has refused to allow it, maybe because it's BAD FOR OUR IMAGE.

Saw'em Off is NOT the same as sawing varsity's horns off. Sawing varsity's horns off isn't even about Texas anymore! It's a visually impressive display of unity. I don't think about beating Texas while sawing varsity's horns off during a game against SFA.

ummm...even though we might be playing someone else at the time, "saw varsity horns off" is still pretty much talking about Texas

I don't understand what people have against AO. They've got some nice shirts. I'm thinking about getting this one for the cotton bowl:

Hell, I'm new army and even I think you're either insane or trolling.

But you're right, it is a display of unity. The unity of every aggie's desire to BTHO t.u.!

If sawing varsity's horns off is a display of unity why don't we all sway the same direction like we used to?

Sawing varsity's horns off is clearly a traditions started by the tsips so we'd yell "LEEEEFT" and "RIIIIGHT" during the middle of the war hymn

The war hymn is about UT, but not the UT of today. The war hymn sings about the UT and A&M of old. That is why we mention "Varsity" instead of "Bevo."

The reason we sing a song about a school that really doesn't exist anymore is because the actual sawing effect makes for really cool visual imagery in the stadium, and to remember the Aggies that came before us in a display of unity.

None of the other teams we consistently play have anything to saw off, so without some sort of UT we would lose this visual effect. But at the same time we don't want to sing about the modern UT because as you know modern UT does not consider us a rival.

So we sing about the old UT, in a way that almost resembles a nostalgia for a simpler time. As we "saw off the horns" we remember the many Aggies that swung this way and that in Kyle years before our time, and we honor them in this way.

I guess I just don't see the big deal in printing something / using a phrase that is deeply rooted in A&M's history.

You can say that the phrase "Saw 'Em Off" isn't the same as "Saw Varsity's Horns Off" but is an abbreviation really that bad?

The Co-Op has shirts that make fun of A&M and so does Tech's gift shop... Whats the harm in making fun of another team, and when did TexAgs become so concerned about it?

This is getting way too analytical. What the hell does it matter if someone wants to saw em off. It's our damn rival and we hate em. We also say gig em and that referred to a team that we don't even play anymore but we still use it all the time.

Why do so many in new army hate A&M and our traditions so much? I've enough putting down of various traditions and being "redass" over the past couple of years from "Aggies" to last me a life time.

As for this:

I don't know that I've ever disagreed with everything in post as much as that.
Are we seriously quibbling about the difference in "Saw 'em off" and "Saw Varsity's horns off"?!?!? And then claiming that sawing the horns off during the War Hymn has nothing to do with t.u.?!?!?
I don't know whether to laugh or cry.

while visually impressive, singing 2 verses AND SVHO is obsessive. Its a hold over from Old Army's inferiority complex toward @ustin and summed up in their belief that its OK to go 1-11 as long as that 1 win is vs the horns.

New Army just doesn't buy it. We don't want to sing and ode of obsession to the horns while getting ready to play Okie Lite. If we had to chose between losing to @ustin and winning a conference title and or something better like a BCS game, then thats an easy choice, let them have the win.

Well, the other thing that many of you are forgetting is the the "Saw Em Off" stuff, that A-O eventually went with, started because alot of us during the early and mid-90's actually went to Austin (or somewhere else that sold them), bought a sip logo sticker, cut the horns off and bent them down and put them on the back of our own cars.

I saw many of these around A&M while I was here before anyone thought about putting that on a t-shirt. AND, anyone who was here around the time knows that A-O didn't even come up with the idea....they saw the t-shirts start popping up and ran with it.

No problem here with the generic phrase, "saw 'em off", but when it becomes a marketing gimick under the guise of tradition it's time to call a spade a spade. Wearing a botched up cow head or sticking it on one's car just takes the insult one step further. We have enough pro-Aggie symbols -we don't need to borrow & mutilate whorn crap to promote our brand.

There is nothing wrong with saw em off... the problem I have with it is that I see more saw em off then I do any pro a&m stuff... when I see a truck drive by with a giant saw em off sticker and nothing a&m on it I cringe a little...

It just pushes the stereotype that we are obsessed with tu... I would rather see pro a&m stickers and shirts than anti tu gear...

And my issue with AO is that they took it too far and put that damn cow out on george bush

Good God people, it's college rivalry!
It's good natured fun. Some of you take this stuff way, WAY too seriously. I swear some of you guys could eff up a wet dream.

The same "Aggies" who think it's obsession with t.u. are the same ones who love the tOSU/Michigan and 'Bama/Auburn rivalries because they're so intense. Yeah those schools never poke fun at, demean, and say that beating their rivals makes an otherwise down year good.

All this talk about inferiority complexes is the most ironic thing. The fact that you've let what t.u. thinks about Aggies and A&M occupy that much space in your head is the ultimate inferiority complex.

Now sack up and BTHO LSU!!!

Now the thing that I call livin' is just bein' satisfied with knowin' I got no one left to blame

I hate t.u. and sing "Saw Varsity's Horns Off" loudly.

I was at A&M when the broken horn shirts with "I will cut thr horns off the wicked" verse were sold by some student group to raise money.

I then have watched the past 15 years as Aggieland Outfitters has purchased the rights to the term "Saw'em Off" and rammed that down New Army's throat at the expense of Gig'em (the first SWC hand symbol) and Texas A&M as a whole.

It has gotten better, but in the mid 2000's it sickened me to see a flash of a t-sip logo and think "there goes a sip..." then realize, "oh, it's just that damn broken horn logo again".

"Saw'em Off" is so not pro-Aggie I would say it is actually anti-Aggie.

I hate the sips and I hate the "Saw'em Off" logo.

I'm not a supporter of it but it's not an obsession with me either. I'd rather define myself and my school with positive symbols, than define myself with putdowns of my rival.

Stop calling it an obsession, it's a rivalry. I could care less what anyone thinks of me for having a saw'em off shirt. There's already A LOT of people that hate us just for being Aggies (hell there is quite a few self-loathing Aggies out there that hate us for being Aggies), and I love it. Let them hate.
