...at least when the NCAA investigation is over in six years.

Joe Schad is reporting Newton and his father told Mississippi State recruiters in several conversations that they would have to pay him to play there and money was the biggest factor in his college choice. Those sources are people who "recruit for Mississippi State." MSU reported the conversations to the NCAA in January.

quote:
After Newton committed to Auburn, another source said an emotional Cam Newton phoned another recruiter to express regret about his change of commitment from Mississippi State, stating that his father Cecil had chosen Auburn for him because "the money was too much."

Yet nobody has been able to prove that he took any money or that Auburn offered him any money...

True but this is the first story that directly links him or his father to the shenanigans. No third parties here.

How long do you want to ignore this user?
it's a ploy between MSU and UF to bring Cam Newton down for spurning their universities. Urban and Mullen saving face for letting Newton get away.

If for some reason this proves to be true, Auburn, Newton, and whoever deserve what they get....right now though --- this is an absolute smear campaign. Seems that the smoke is coming out of the 'villes of Starks and Gaines

It seems like Plan A didnt work so the initiated Plan B and that one didnt sink the ship so lets throw Plan C in the mix to see what that does. It's like me telling you I saw your wife out with another man while you were out of town but didnt take any pictures of it. I dated your wife in high school and she broke my heart. As of right now, to me, it seems like there are a lot of broken hearts in the SEC.

The investigation is ongoing, and I doubt anyone from within the Auburn athletic department paid Newton's family any money. A "church donation" could have been arranged by a booster. There's just way too much smoke here from so many different sources for it not to be highly suspect.

I think the grade story was a deliberate smear campaign. In a way, it makes it easier to discredit the latest allegation.

its not different sources though.

Mullen was Meyers man...they are one and the same.

Why's that? When did we find out about Reggie Bush?

This looks really bad for Auburn.

In the Reggie Bush scandal, the dominoes started to fall because Lloyd Lake and God knows whoever else didn't get paid.

I have a hunch that's how this Cam Newton stuff got into the open--somebody, along the way, didn't get paid--and that somebody tipped off dominoes because of it.

Six figures is a lot of money, but on the other hand--it's NOT considering the likely tastes of the people involved. Six figures is chump change relatively speaking, and if you had more than one party dipping in the pot, somebody is coming up short. And that someone could be angry enough to go nuclear, ie, to the press.

"church donation"

Newton's church received money to fix up their church in September. Auburn started recruiting Newton in DECEMBER almost 3 months after that.

Newton's father has turned over personal financial records, as well as, church financial records. Coming from someone who has been following the situation in depth, there's too much smoke coming from the opposite camp with too many holes to think it isn't a smear campaign. Auburn wins this weekend --- good chance we face none other than Urban Meyer and the Florida Gators in the SECCG.

I think Newton tells everyone how he feels about the situation by his performance on the field this weekend. He is very motivated and very focused to shove this back in the nay-sayers faces.

His father already handed over his churches financial records. Urban is pissed Newton has taken the SEC by storm.

I agree that it came out at this point to smear Auburn and Newton, no doubt in my mind. If they were unranked and Newton was not a Heisman frontrunner, the people leaking this stuff would have kept their mouth shut, at least for now.

I'm guessing whoever started leaking this stuff and those continuing to divulge information are doing it because Auburn is in line for a MNC appearance and playing with a guy they believe to be bought, and the NCAA is dragging it's feet. I would be pissed off if I were Meyer or MSU too.
Univex
How long do you want to ignore this user?
One would think the NCAA would have a sense of urgency about these things. Reports make it sound as if the investigation only started in the last month or so despite the allegations being almost ten months old. They owe it to their member institutions and the student athletes they claim to care so much about to resolve things like this quickly.

How long do you want to ignore this user?
I agree Univex. Former AU Coach Pat Dye was optimistic that things would be brought to light by the end of the week. The FBI is lurking around John Bond and MSU right now though, so who knows where this will go. It's gotten real, however. One side is going to go down. Auburn is not under any kind of investigation by the NCAA at this time though.

Interesting read for those interested:

quote:
The latest allegations regarding Newton come from FOXSports.com writer Thayer Evans, who claimed a single source informed him Newton "had three different instances of academic cheating while attending the University of Florida and faced potential expulsion".

The allegations came four days after Evans wrote a column encouraging Heisman voters not to vote for Newton, the heavy front-runner to win college football's most prestigious individual award.

Evans' column ran hours after ESPN.com and The New York Times ran stories Thursday claiming a former Mississippi State quarterback, John Bond, alleged a former teammate solicited money from MSU in exchange for Newton's signature on a letter of intent.

Evans, according to his bio on FOXSports.com, previously wrote for The New York Times.

Following the initial allegations of wrongdoings in the recruitment of Newton, AuburnSports.com reported Florida coach Urban Meyer encouraged the allegations be made public to the media during a three-way telephone call with Bond and Mississippi State head coach Dan Mullen.

AuburnSports.com has also discovered a connection between Florida and the leaking of the recent cheating allegations to the public.

Alex DeLaet knew about the allegations Nov. 4, four days before the story ran on FOXSports.com.

DeLaet posted Thursday on Rivals.com's "Main Board" message board: "Apparently the truth is coming out sometime in the next few days. Apparently (Newton) got caught cheating in class."

DeLaet posted early Tuesday morning hours after the FOXSports.com report on the allegations of Newton cheating was published, "Aubs (Auburn fans), sorry to tell you that I was right."

When asked how he knew in advance, DeLaet wrote, "I have a very good source at UF."

He later edited his statement to read, "I have a very good source."

When reached by AuburnSports.com Tuesday, DeLaet, who resides in Omaha, Neb., declined comment.

DeLaet's brother, Eric DeLaet, works in the video department of the University of Florida's football program.

Attempts to reach Eric DeLaet for comment were unsuccessful.

As much as I like war eagle, the bias is incredible. If this were Cam Newton of Texas, we'de be tripping over ourselves to join in on the lynch mob. But it's not, and the simple fact is that NO ONE knows the truth right now. The kid's on top, and he's priority #1....it comes with the territory.

Let's watch it play out. And try not to take solid sides that will get you quoted when you're wrong in 3 weeks.
wareagle044
How long do you want to ignore this user?
the latest article states that "two sources who recruit for Mississippi State" that has to be coaches of some sort doesn't it?

To me, this shows that someone on the MSU coaching staff is DEFINITELY behind this.

feel free to quote me in 3 weeks or 3 years, i've already stated if it turns out to be true then Auburn and Newton get what they deserve if they are that stupid. I'm taking the innocent til proven guilty approach, and right now there is no evidence that shows ANYONE they should believe what's coming out in the media.

If it does turn out to be true, it will be a long long time before I bring myself to support Auburn athletics.

Wow, that rivals mod really needs to be fired. You can't start handing out individuals personal info like that. I have no problem with him calling him up or even handing the info over to the NCAA. However this guy went way to far making that information public. Bad move.

I'm curious how you came to the conclusion that I don't believe Mullen and Meyer are behind the leaks. Of course they are.
HoyaSaxa
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Of course the timing is ridiculous, but if the allegations are true, then it's still a total mess.

There is a bit of humorous irony. Meyer has had such a permissive policy with other players, and the one player he essentially cracks down on is the one proving to be the most successful somewhere else.

It's stuff like this that gives me pause when considering a move to the SEC.

rivals mod had the guys e-mail address provided to him and found him on facebook. rivals mod did nothing wrong. auburn people are very active on the rivals main board. The reason I was able to read it was because an Auburn user linked it from the main board. The guy was an idiot for outing himself and his brother like that. now it's time for florida to start answering the tough questions that'll surely come their way.

it's not just coming out. Well, it is to the public. MSU reported the conversations to the NCAA in January. you can bet your ass the NCAA has been busy.

It does sound a bit like a smear campaign. Maybe not old SWC smear campaign. UF and MSU do have to make sure there not tangled up with Cam's short sighted father.

When will Auburn learn, you play with fire....

I listen to Finebaum on itunes as I'm working. Listening to all the Auburn fans gloat over Cam was getting old. Now all the callers are trying to defend the kid regardless of what is becoming a a pretty nice case of "rules don't apply to me." I'm the big man on campus, just ask my dad.

There is a reason the SEC has been so strong for so long. They have 6 or 7 teams that are just willing to pay more than anyone else. I'd throw USC and OU into that group as well.

They are behind the leaks. No doubt about it...but that doesn't make the allegations untrue. They are going public right now to distract the Auburn football team and to make Newton look bad. I don't like what they are doing, but if they feel like the NCAA has had the information and isn't doing anything about it, I can understand why they would go public with their SEC rival in line to play for a MNC led by a guy that they probably believe got bought. Don't like it, but understand it.

I know if I got a couple hundred grand that I shouldn't have I wouldn't put it in my records. The kid has stolen and cheated.
Recruits taking money is a fact. Chances are with his history he took money.
Clearly Urban and Mullen are in on it as they have first hand knowledge of what it would take to recruit him and Urban was there for the cheating and stealing. I do not care if they speak out about the truth. If more coaches would do it, it may clean up the recruiting business.

A moderator revealing personal information of a poster on a message board is a big no no. I post on other message boards and have literally seen peoples lives ruined because of it.

Nothing illegal about it I don't think, but this is why you should have e-mail addresses that can't link to your personal info.
