He was a good friend of my dad's. He helped me get my first head coaching job.. I will always be indebted for that.
In 1959 I asked my dad who the best high school coaches were. He answered with little hesitation. Gordon Wood, Emory Bellard and Bum Phillips. He had coached for many years so he had a good idea.
