Standing Ready ... a tribute to Coach Emory Bellard
28 years ago, Texas A&M gave me the tremendous opportunity to be exposed to true Aggie Spirit and experience just what makes this place so unique. I was immersed in Aggie traditions: Midnight Yell, Muster, Silver Taps, Corps life and Bonfire. To this day, I fondly recall the pride and brotherhood that I felt when, while working on Bonfire, I was invited into the sacred Red Pot’s Shack. Times have changed, but the Spirit of Aggieland remains alive.
When I started the 12th Man Kick-Off Team, I experienced first-hand one of the most important Aggie Traditions of all: Standing Ready for a fellow Aggie in need. The members of the 12th Man Kick-Off Team did whatever it took to Stand Ready for the football team, their fellow students and Texas A&M. They sacrificed grades and bodies more than anyone on my teams. In doing so, they made a tremendous difference in the attitude and connection to the students and former students. They brought the spirit and meaning of Standing Ready alive on the field. Students and former students responded in a way that only Aggies understand.
Earlier this year, when the news of former Aggie Coach Emory Bellard's battle with ALS became public, the 12th Man Kick-Off Team again committed to call to muster the meaning of "Standing Ready.” Emory Bellard’s legacy to Texas A&M and the coaching ranks will stand ready as a tribute to excellence, dedication and compassion. Coach Bellard’s invention of the wishbone offense, installation of swarming defensive speed and promotion of recruiting served as a precursor to Texas A&M’s future successes, paving the way for the Wrecking Crew.
The 12thMKOT®Foundation has a scholarship banquet each year to announce its recipients. This year, the Foundation affirms its mission by Standing Ready for a special Aggie. The Foundation will be honoring Coach Emory Bellard in his fight against ALS, along with presenting Aggie scholarships. I am asking you, fellow Aggies, fans, friends and students to join us in honoring Coach Bellard in his fight against ALS by attending the banquet and paying tribute to this Aggie Coaching Legend.
The banquet will take place on November 19 at the Zone Club at Kyle Field. You can purchase tickets and/or a table to attend the meet and greet with coaches & players at 5 p.m. at the Zone at Kyle Field. Or you can purchase tickets to attend the dinner and program, which starts at 7:00 p.m. Once the event is sold out, this opportunity will forever be gone.
This will be a rare and special evening that you won’t want to miss. Honoring Coach Bellard will be former players from Texas A&M and Mississippi State, along with some of the great coaches from the Old Southwest Conference who will be speaking and reminiscing. Speakers include: R.C. Slocum, Frank Broyles, Grant Teaff, Bill Yeoman, Spike Dykes and Bum Phillips. They comprise a special collection of Southwest Conference and Texas football legends, respected for their championship teams and commitment to a higher purpose.
I hope you will join us in Standing Ready to assist Coach Bellard in fighting the battle against ALS. For more information, go to our website: www.12thMKOT.org and click on the homepage picture of Emory. You can also call us at (800) 481-1876 or email us aggie12thMKOT@yahoo.com.
