Any older Ag's know what this story is about? Marcus Dupree from Oklahoma is getting spotlighted on their documentary series. I have never heard of him.

Dupree was one of the most highly recruited rb's out of high school ever. I think it's just about how expectations were so high and how he never lived up to them.

Watch.
I was at the Fiesta Bowl (showing my age) with my dad when he shredded Az State as a freshman. Switzer moved away from the wishbone a little to move to an I-formation to increase Dupree's touches. He is the best back I have ever seen in play in person.
Also check out the book "the courting of marcus dupree", great read.

all world RB from Philadelphia, MS. was recruited by every major school in the country; sips thought they had him- as did many other schools; he allegedly had his hand out; he even told the NCAA the sips gave him cowboy boots, money, etc. but the NCAA did nothing

he wound up a ou and did okay but never lived up to his hype

He was incredible.

IIRC, he came a few years after Billy Sims and played in an era of Sooner dominance in the Big 8.

Big. Fast. Strong. Played for Switzer.

Semi hi-jack - Robert Strait from Cuero was the best back I ever saw coming out of high school who did nothing at Baylor.

Haha, sorry Czar. I said older, not old. Meaning older than me...

I thought it might be a Ricky Williams thing, where the pressure got to him and he quit. It kind of made it look that way when they showed his locker with his name on it but nothing there. I'll be sure to check it out.

I thought you were going to say it was about Kenneth Hall. The greatest high school football player to ever choose to play for Texas A&M, and Bear Bryant left him sitting on the bench for four years.

Here's an interesting interview with Switzer conducted while the whole story was unraveling:

Strait was the top running back in the state--everyone wanted him. He never did anything in college because the first thing Teaff did when Strait arrived on campus was convert him to FB. I kid you not. The most dynamic blue chip running back in the state was turned into a blocker. Absolutely the most bone-headed move Teaff ever pulled.

dupree had it all in an RB. I saw straight play in the 1988 state championship game in college station. he was by far head and shoulders better than anyone at this time. he was 230 or so as a senior. flat out power with some speed. I was shocked when he signed w/baylor. lots of people think there was funny business going on. baylor was decent at the time, but A&M was king and tu was crap.
