The university does, not the athletic department. I'm not sure how people don't understand this. The athletic department is a completely separate entity from the university.

Fran's buyout is on the athletic department. He is owed $1 million this year as the final payment on the buyout. He will be off the athletic department's payroll after this year.

So we pay RC $250,000 under the table through the University for playing golf and making a few phone calls. Thats supposed to make everyone feel better about the state of affairs at the University?

For those of you belaboring the well-known point that RC is paid out of the president's office, please tell me what academic or administrative function he serves that is unrelated to athletics. After you do that, remind yourself that A&M is not on the short list of schools with autonomous athletic budgets. They are separate departments, but the Athletic Department is not entirely separate from the university. That assertion is simply false.

The athletic department has no funding or financial supporting from the university's budget. It is self sufficient. That is why it was a shocker and really pissed the university off when Byrne asked for the loan. Byrne has asked multiple times for some financial support from the university like many other universities do. But each time he is told no and that the athletic department is meant to be self-sufficient.
