I had never seen this thread before or I would have posted. I've told this story in other threads.
My father was part of stealing one of the bear cubs in about 1950 or '51. He said they had the cub (not a full size bear, but not real small either) in the car. The bear went haywire and started tearing up the inside of the car. Said they wound up chaining or tying it to an underpass and called somebody (school or police) to tell them where it was.
He said "I think we might have gotten away with it, but we then had the bright idea to go around town using black shoe polish to paint 'Beat the hell out of Baylor' on the big white sidewall tires."
At some point, a group of Baylor students caught them, and he said that they were lucky that the police showed up about the same time because they were seriously outnumbered.
Got back to campus and he was given the option of getting kicked out of school and not being able to re-enroll, or resigning and he would be eligible to come back after a year.
He resigned, went into the army and eventually graduated in 1961. I was born in '56 and we lived in the old married student's housing until he graduated. I still have some memories of being around campus from when I was young.
