So you're one that makes passes to only those you know? Wear that badge with pride!

Yes, Aggro, I am. In the FTAB, until a knee injury took me out. Moore Hall thereafter.

Tradition isn't what makes the school great. It's what makes the school unique. The people are and always have been what makes A&M great.

If anything, I'd think the disappearance of a tradition (Bonfire, Howdy, etc.) would make it all the more special to the people who got to experience it when it was still around, and not something to hold over the heads of people who didn't experience it. Let the new kids experience things the old guard never did, like a damn good basketball team, and guys in drag with Nerf football halves for boobs trying to get on ESPN.

Yeah, because that's what "Howdy" means.

Strange now that Military Walk is back and Howdy is all but dead. Maybe a Howdy revival?

I am a current student. A sophomore.

I recently started an internship this summer at Southern Union Energy. I work with about 17 other Ag grads who range from class of '74 to about '04. Of course, they are all much older and wiser.

Before I was hired, I met with each of them and seeing the joy in knowing another Ag was joining, they remembered me quite well.

I finally started the other day. Upon walking in, I had both older and even the youngest greet me with a Howdy. Here, on my first day I was told Howdy more times by former students than probably anyone on campus for the whole first semester.

Quite sad. No one talks to each other, some days campus is silent. But, there are some who still use the word inclduing myself. Hopefully people will one day wake up.

They also got rid of the Top 10% rule, it's now 8% I believe.

You're bumming me out, awm1. I was talking to my wife about this topic over the weekend - it really affected her. We met on campus and we're planning a return trip to a game this Fall. Haven't been back in over 15 years. Our son is 12 now and I've told him so many stories about the Aggie experience and Spirit and I fear he'll be disappointed.

How is it during Game weekends? I've also told many of my friends that on Friday nights at Northgate, if you're wearing the other teams colors, you won't have to crack open your wallet because you've just made good friends with a bar full of Ags who will take you in and even invite you to Midnight Yell. Does that still happen?

EDIT: spelling

I can't vouch for the vibe on campus during the school year, but game weekends are still awesome, and the crowd at Northgate (from my experience) still treats visitors the same as before.

Howdy was dead in 2002 as a casual greeting. Yea, someone might have said it when addressing a large crowd, but thats the only time I ever heard it.

When I was in school I remember the Batt occassionally re-running articles from their archives. They'd pick "Old Army has gone to hell!" things like students in 1920 lamenting how "Howdy" is dead due to the new generation.

boulderaggie,

Campus really hasnt improved, but who am I to speculate? I am only a sophomore. But game weekends I can vouch for. When the older Ags come together it's incredible. And yes, the Northgate spirit and hospitality are still the same. Visitng fans are treated better than anywhere else in the world hands down. In the office I am currently working there are Horned Frogs, Cougars, Bears, Raiders, and some Boilermakers and of course Horns. They have all expressed to me how the Ags in the office have taken them to games for years and how they enjoy the treatment. it makes me proud.

This isnt to say that the spirit is dead. it never will be even if a few students care little for the traditions. it is sadly inevitable.

I'm a junior mechanical engineering student, and I have to say I've definitely seen a decrease in Howdy since I've been at school at A&M, even though I know it wasn't thriving when I arrived. In the engineering side of campus it's nonexistent, but being a business minor as well, I get to head over to West Campus and over there it seems to be a little better. As a fish camp counselor I always stressed saying Howdy, and I say it on a daily basis, use it to start every email I send, and integrate it as much into daily life as I can. I will say, however, that I'm not the norm. I just hope the class of 2014 can revive it.

However, as far as campus as a whole is concerned, the congeniality is still the same as it was when I first visited A&M 12 years ago. Everyone holds doors, guys give up their seats, etc.

Things aren't quite the way they used to be, and I hate that, but they're also not as bad as some say.

Old Army...going to hell since 1877.

Excuse me, I meant a century earlier.

It started before that. It started the day the "C" was replaced with the "U" on the Fish brass. Or sooner.
