Chris Cole was kidding about that last part. He's not kidding, however, about trying to bring back "Howdy," a longtime A&M sidewalk staple.

"I didn't know you weren't supposed to speak on campus anymore," he said. "I'm the creepy guy walking around saying, 'Howdy!' I took 'Howdy' with me to the NFL. When I see old NFL teammates, they still say 'Howdy' to me.

"Now, students seem to say it in sarcasm. And when I say it, it seems like I'm trying to relive my youth."

Is this for real? "Howdy" is dead and only used in sarcasm??

it has been dead since cellphones and ipods came out. People would rather be entertained than polite

That sucks. To all of the current non-Howdy students - you are seriously dropping the ball. What a disappointment.

Those of us who spend a significant amount of time on campus over the last several years knew this was a trend, but to have someone come back after 10 years and comment to this extent on "howdy" shows you what a decline there has been in the use of the word. And yes, I think there is a direct link to earbuds and not speaking to your fellow Ags.

To me it is simply which part of campus you are on.
West campus you will hear howdy more often. Around the engineering and science buildings it is less likely to hear.
It's howdy damnitt

Plus, it's just a different breed of kids. They've grown up with facebook, ipods and online games. I think in a way it kind of changed the way they interact with eachother. They're polite and open and communicate just fine in their own "space" or their own "circles", but outside of that...it's a different story.

Oh, plus bonfire went away....HUGE deal.

Just one man's opinion.

It started dying in the 90s when fish were told when they got to campus that you only say Howdy to the ugly girls... after a while you (I) felt kind of guilty about saying it at all. I still say Howdy though... even to the pretty ones

There is no acceptable excuse for not saying howdy.

New army needs to get their act together.

Howdy damnit!

And you ipod wearing guys better stand up for the ladies on the bus!

I used to say howdy to people all the time, and I was the oddball then. That was three years ago.

I got my iphone blowing and bluetooths on both sides, and my sunglasses on....

I got no time for the real world. I can barely keep myself from walking into traffic while texting.

"Howdy" always made the campus feel like a more connected place. Sad to see it's not part of campus life anymore. Times and technology have changed much for the better, but personal interaction is too often overlooked now. Ex. A text message to say you'll meet somebody at Northgate in 30 min. is great. A text message to break up with a girlfriend/boyfriend? Besides being classless, I don't think you learn any valuable lessons by doing it that way. Perhaps the yell leaders should try to encourage saying "Howdy" more. I believe that kind of thing would fall into their realm of responsibility (regardless of whether it would have any affect).

THE DECLINE OF "HOWDY" IS DIRECTLY CORRELATED TO THE NUMBER OF YEARS SINCE FIGHTIN' TEXAS AGGIE BONFIRE BURNED ON CAMPUS.

I say HOWDY all the time in Wyoming. In fact it's rubbed off on my ski partner from New Jersey, he has started saying it.

I always thought there was some sort of campus group whose goal was to maintain traditions.

Is Fish Camp attendance on decline? Are they even taught the traditions any more? I've always felt that is was our traditions that laid the foundation to the Aggie spirit. And that was what really set us apart.

Very disappointing.

This is a problem! If this is true... This causes more concern than going 6-7 last year. IMHO ... I guess it should be expected considering the way blogs, myspace and f-book are considered "community" and "relational". There is no substitute for living in real community and being hospitable.
Football related because i fell in love with the "spirit of aggieland" as a result of my first trip to an A&M/LSU game. Everyone was so friendly then.

I'm not saying New Army sucks... but i am saying its disappointing.

FWIW, Facebook and the like aren't really "communities" because you never have to deal with interacting with people you don't like, as with the real world, and it is much easier to pretend to be someone you really are not in person.

I say howdy all the time, and I've been out of school since '99.

i hope all you guys who keep on and on and on with ur "new army sucks" bull realize that the New Army that you hate on here on texags are usually the guys following traditions and the few of us on campus that still say Howdy! everytime i read "new army sucks" i just think "no army sucks"...these students who dont follow any traditions and some who laugh at certian traditions...those are the ones that cause traditions like this to die....

Take "Howdy" with you wherever you go.

I got my first workplace out of college saying it back in '03. I have people on my running trail saying it today.

It's everyone's responsibility. Something I enjoyed about A&M was that everyone was valued the same regardless of how "cool" you were. A&M was a great social equalizer, and "Howdy" played a role in that. My hope is that this is the same environment today.

Every time we go through the gate on base I say "Howdy" to the security force airman. My kids laugh.

My six year old said, "Daddy, why do you say Howdy all the time?"

I said, "Because I'm an Aggie".

It's really gone down drastically even from last year. I think it has a lot to do with the prevalence of cell phones and iPods, but it's something deeper. People don't even make eye contact with each other when passing by. I've always found this sort of disturbing.

If I can get a person to look me in the eye, I'll give them a grin and a "Howdy!" but otherwise they just end up staring at you like you're from Mars (or ignoring you completely).

I think it also might have something to do with the exponential increase in the number of students. You'd have to say "Howdy" 500 times between classes to cover everyone. That's a length that most people aren't willing to go to, unfortunately.

Sure it'd be great if people always said it, but come on. It's more concerning that people don't say howdy than our 6-7 record last year? Lord.
