Or any sip players to A&M? What about in other sports? Just a random question I think about every once in a while. I seem to recall an Ohio State player that had transferred from Michigan.

I'm sure it's happened in some sport at some point in history, but in general, inter conference transfers are very rare because the rules are not very student friendly with how much they have to sit out.

It has happened several times in baseball.

I don't know about football players, but a LOT of students flunk out and go to t.u., only to raise the average IQ of both schools.

(I know. An old joke. But ... it just might be true.)

Back in '88, Mark Erwin from Hillsboro, TX received a scholly to go to tu. Soon after arriving, it became apparent that tu was not interested in him getting an education of any kind (important to him because his dad was a doctor) so he quit and walked-on to the A&M football team. I'm not sure how many years he played, but I know he was on the 92 squad that went 12-1.

It's time local football fans get to know the four new faces: Offensive Coordinator and Quarterback Coach David Brewer, Defensive Coordinator and Linebackers Coach Mark Erwin, Academic Coordinator and Linemen Coach C J Lottinger and Defensive Secondary Coach Lance Herring.
...
Coach Mark Erwin mans the defensive front, a spot that he's more than familiar with.

After graduation from Hillsboro High School, Erwin received a scholarship from the University of Texas, but - lo and behold - he transferred to Texas A&M where he played nose guard.Erwin flashed a Cotton Bowl ring he earned from his Aggie days.

His wife, Becca, was a college golfer and, according to him, is a lot better athlete than he ever was.He tells people that he "married up!"She is fulfilling her teacher's contract so she will move here after May.

The couple has a son, five-year-old Ethan who was born on 9/11, and a little girl (which he commented that every coach needs), two-year old Ellie Rose .

Erwin has a Master's Degree in Sports Management and after a graduate assistant stint, began coaching for two years at Irving Nimitz. He then went back to Hillsboro as Defensive Coordinator and ended up as Athletic Director and Head Coach. He comes here from Alvarado, where he was Offensive Coordinator and Assistant Line coach.

"I'm very pleased with these players' attitudes," he said."They're hungry, looking for some leadership and show a lot of positive attention.

"The kids are responding and we see a lot of good things on the field at all positions."

When asked about size and speed, Erwin answered "You never have enough of either.
...
"It's always good to be near family," said Erwin.

Semi-related question: Why doesn't Aggie Athletics have rosters available for those teams? Those were the glory days and I have to think that somebody has a roster, even if it is only stats.

AND BTW, TEXAGS, WE KNOW STUFF!

I think the basketball player Darrin Kelly was given an A&M scholly and didn't make it in here. Then 2 weeks later he was playing AGAINST us and playing for the sips. I forget who our coach was then but he was PISSED and made a comment about it in the presser.

Think you mean Shawn Shumacher. There might've been a relief pitcher that transferred to A&M from Texas around that same timeframe.

Catcher Shawn Shumacher (sp) and outfielder Carlos Sepulveda both started off at tu. I think there was even a pitcher named French at one point and time

i didnt know Carlos Sepulveda went to to tu first.. Chris French did transfer here from tu. and shawn schumacher came here after arriving in austin and finding an infielder's glove in his locker, as he was told he would be a catcher.

tu RB Butch Hadnot "disappeared" from Austin and then reappeared in CS and talked w/ RC about transferring. I think RC told him he needed to go back and talk to David McWilliams or something like that. I think he eventually dropped out and tried to play in the CFL.

There was at least one baseball player who transferred to A&M when Augie arrived in Austin. I can't think of his name but he was a relief pitcher (closer) and he made all conference.

OptionRead/Hambone,

That's the pitcher I was thinking of. His name is actually Eric French and not Chris.

Justin Boren is the OG who transferred from Michigan to OSU. He publically said it was because of "family values," but insiders in the program said it was because he didn't like the running involved in a no-huddle offense and because UM didn't offer a scholarship to his kid brother. He is talented, but he's a *****less tub of goo

Eric French was a pitcher for the Horns and transferred to A&M for his Senior season. He came in as the closer to shut the Horns down in game 2 or 3 of the series... I believe which the Ags took 2-1.

When Garrido took over the Texas program, under the leadership of Cliff Gustafson's son (the defacto head coach while a volunteer assistant) had fallen apart and needed a major infusion of talent. Garrido was signed late and didn't have a recruiting class to sign for his first year.

After an embarrassing first year, there were several players who were told that they were going to have to make some major changes in effort and attitude in order to return. French was one of them. The returning players were also notified that they were going to recieve less scholarship dollars for the next year and that, if they chose to transfer, they would be given a release.

The class signed by Garrido prior to French's senior year was allocated a lot of scholarship money (was ranked #1 in the country) and was the class that ultimately turned the Texas program around when they matured in 2000 with Texas' first trip back to Omaha since 1993. French would have done nothing to help that effort.

The catcher was needed to play another position (to get the best athletes on the field) which is something Garrido has done over the years with talented catchers who can play other positions. Some are team oriented and some are position oriented. He usually tells the guys that if they don't want to play the other position, then he'll give them a release. He moved Kade Johnson (a highly regarded catching prospect) to the OF, which is where he ultimately drafted into the pros.

Hard to argue with Garrido's decision making as a coach unless you want to look stupid.

Why would anyone smart enough to get accepted to A&M be stupid enough to transfer to TU? Maybe those who are on illegal narcotics or suffering from a mental condition.

Possibly people we kicked out or couldn't pass their classes may have downgraded and transferred but to choose TU over A&M is pure crazy talk.

Obviously I'm real late to the post. I just want to clarify Reaper's response. First off, we had our end of year meetings and what Reaper said was not how it went down exactly. There was a lot more, but in the end my scholarship was cut(not less) and they essentially Told me to get out. There was more but there's no reason to cry over spilled milk.
Secondly, as far as my value to any future teams. I came to Texas A&M earned All-Big12, e.r.a. Below 2, and earned all region so I might want to dispute your argument of me not adding any value. I had one more year, so maybe they gave my scholarship to someone that helped 1-4 years later, but to dismiss my contributions is near sighted.
In the end I am blessed to have had the opportunity to play for the Aggies and Coach Johnson, Dickey, and Lawler. But as good as a coach Garrido is as a coach, he is or was a ****ty person. What happened to me was not the only "story". If end results is what matters then Garrido is your guy, but if treating others as you would like to be treated is something you believe in, then you might understand and value treating people better.
