Why did they speed up the Old Army yell?

I saw this at many sport events last year, but I just got back from the ladies soccer game and it reminded me about this. I don't like it. They need to put it back.

It should go
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA RRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM YYYYYYYyyyyyyyyy and so on.

It now goes AAA RRR MMM Yyy. I guess new army is a little to lazy to do it proper.

Glad you were able to make it to the game. This is a special team, though you may not realize that from the last 2 sloppy games. You're welcome to join us at the A&M Soccer Forum.

I noticed the Old Army yell sped up first at Reed Arena. This is the first time I've seen it sped up at the Soccer Stadium. It seems to be a non-football trend that's used to get the yell done before action on the field restarts. Since it's a longer yell and there's not much downtime in sports like soccer and basketball, I think they are just trying to get it off before action restarts (or comes our end of the field where we stop yelling).

Don't worry, I doubt it will affect football.

I don't like it either for the record.

Why haven't they scrapped the old army yell?

They sped it up in 2000 and reverted it in 2001.

I kind of like it, because the longer version does not pump you up at all, like a yell should. It has the same effect of T-E-A-M, where afterward, everyone is kinda bleh.

That's a lame explanation, but you know what I mean. It's one of those yells that you do the passback for, but you are like "..Why this one?"

The biggest reason that T-E-A-M is such a let down is because someone other than the ags scored...thats always a let down. However, I didn't know that had changed the old army yell, personally I like it quite a bit when we drew out the letters

I'm guessing, but one reason it's faster may be b/c a while back (long time ago not sure how far back) it was actually done much faster. Same with the Aggie War Hymn and other yells as well.

Yeah I know. So it's bad that it has the same effect. It just puts the crowd to sleep.

I know that for basketball it was a welcome change. Nothing is more out of place with fast breaks and a motion offense than a boring yell.

"AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA RRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM YYYYYYYyyyyyyyyy" sounds like rock chalk jayhawk K U to me. is it supposed to?

This is my favorite yell and I love how it sounds drawn out. Kinda haunting...and it does kinda remind me of Rock Chock.

i remember when they started trying to speed it up. that was like my sophomore or junior year. i didn't like it AT ALL. they scrapped the idea after one season. guess they decided to give it another shot doing it the fast way after i graduated.

like others, i kind of liked that it was so slow. reminded me of some kind of gregorian chant, much like "rock chalk jayhawk". i can understand those that say it's just too slow, but i kind of liked it that way.

If I remember correctly, Sherman wanted to do it (yell leaders say this at fish camp might I say), because recent years the new old army(confusing I know) was soooooo slow. By that he means defense.

I guess I'm the only one who likes it fast

I remember when the yells didn't sound like questions.

For example

A-G-G-I-E-S

When I was there the S was pronounced normal and forcibly at the end. Now the S is pronounced with a drawn out upward inflection. I think it sounds retarded now.

according to a yell leader from a few years ago, the yell got slowed down when a bunch of opposing fans came to midnight yell practice and tried (successfully) to mess up our yells.

now if we could only get people to stop yelling "hump it ags!" during The Spirit...

New Army has A.D.D. Everything has to be made faster and more kick-a** or they will stop paying attention and just wander off aimlessly looking for a kegger.

I ask this question honestly....does ANY yell orchestrated by the yellboys actually get you fired up?

It's not just New Army. It is our society as a whole.

You can't blame the younger Ags, it is how they grew up. They don't know a world without instant everything.

I know I'm only 10 years older than most of the current students, but I remember when there were no cell phones, no internet, and very few video games. It is a different world now.

In the "real world" I agree with you; but on TexAgs I blame New Army. Geez.

Now, what were we talking about?

Bingo.

traditionally, the yells were much much faster.

And as a previous poster mentioned, the S shouldn't be a long drawn out "S".

But take it for a grain of salt. We also were known as the A&M wildcats/lions at one point.
