Now I always liked the leg whip.
It was legal back when I played.
If you're going after a player on defense, say you go to your left and try to execute a crab block (are crab blocks still legal?) and he goes to the right, you are essentially down on all fours and in one motion you whip your body around to the right and whip the back side of your legs and feet into the defensive player. If you were moving fast enough and had the momentum, you could actually get your feet into the defensive player's head and face and it was even more effective. Gosh that was fun!
It was much more effective when we had 3/4" hard nylon cleats with aluminum tips. It was like kicking someone while you were down on the ground and had missed your block.
I have used the whip in handball matches when playing against an opponent who acts like he doesn't know how to get out of the way. The guy stands in the way of a tough shot, you go down to get it and as your hands are on the floor, give him a whip, hopefully to the head, and thereafter he may back off and give you a clear shot to the ball.
It was dangerous, just like the chop block (which I also took great pride in executing) and that's why they both were made illegal.
Back then, mid fifties to early/mid sixties, at the beginning it was even legal to grab a face mask (they were just coming into style and you were considered a p---y if you wore one). Being able to grab the mask legally only lasted about 3 weeks before the rule was changed in mid season.
There are several things that are legal now that were not back then, but I thought the advantage definitely shifted to the offense when the rule changed to allow an offensive player to use his hands in blocking/pushing.
