I am not fortunate enough to have any of my older relatives (uncles....grandpas) that went to A&M and I got to thinking....what is usually done with a person's Aggie Ring after death? I don't have any experience with this.

Is it buried with the person? Passed on to the family?

(football related.....many Aggie football players have Aggie Rings)

probably a good question to ask each of them before they die...

I would guess that it stays with the family. Why waste it??

I would guess most are buried in it...if not, just stays with the family. Not sure what other scenarios there are besides those two.

I'd ask what they want done with it. A lot of folks want to be buried wearing theirs. Others think it's dumb to put what could be a precious heirloom in a hole and throw dirt on top.

I have my grandfather's, great-uncle's, and dad's.

This reminds me of a story I've wanted to tell on here for awhile and this looks like a great time.

I bartend at Veritas Wine & Bistro here in College Station. I have a regular from San Antonio who comes in for every home game, almost every weekend basketball home game and several baseball games every year. She's a sweet lady and as big of a supporter of Aggie sports as you'll find.

She never attended Texas A&M but was married for a long time to a die-hard Aggie. They went to every game together, and unfortunately he died a few years ago. She still comes to every game obviously and I expect to see her the night before games at the bar.

One Night I noticed a bracelet on her wrist and after examining it I realized it was very unique. After her husband died she took his aggie ring to a jeweler. She had the bottom of the ring cut and the gold (except the emblem on top) flattened out to where it is now a bracelet. She wears it everywhere.

It is one of the most unique and passionate examples of the Aggie spirit I have ever seen. Obviously one of the best examples of true love and devotion as well.

I have left strict instructions that when I die, my ring will go to the first of my children that graduate from Texas A&M. The school has a program with Balfour that allows an Aggie nugget to be melted down and remolded into a new one for the new owner. If I die after my children are past college age, my ring will go to the first of my grandchildren to graduate from Texas A&M.

I have my grandfathers ('20) ring. I cherish it. I will pass it down a generation when my time comes and the Aggie Legacy in our family will continue.........

My pawpaw '53 hasn't said what he wants done with his. I'm his only decendent to graduate.

His ring is impressive, it's worn smooth on the sides. In 2003, he thought about getting a new one but decided not to.

Very cool Bigfinch. I will pass my ring on to my son. He's 2 now and I hope he will be in the class of 2028. Even if he decides to go to another school, he'll still have it. I don't want to be buried with it.

I'm getting my dad's. I haven't really talked to him about it, but I'm getting it whether he likes it or not. Then one day, if I have a son, he will get both of them.

Yeah, never be buried with your ring. When they get rid of cemeteries in 50 years the construction company building the condos or whatever will collect all the rings, gold teef and pimp outfits and sell them. When I'm nearing death I'm going to give mine to a young parakeet who will live 100 years.

I have my dads, and my brother, class of 54, who passed away three years ago had his placed on his hand in the casket so that he would be seen one last time in his ring. His wife then removed it before burial as per his desire, and now has it in her possession for her memories.

My dad always told me he wished he had my grandfather's ring but was afraid my grandfather would haunt him the rest of his life if he took it off his finger since he had never removed it for anything that anyone could remember. Because my dad told me that I took his right before we closed his casket and now cherish it more than my own ring.

That makes the "assumption" that one can trust a bank.

My dad ('55) was killed in 2004 by a drunk driver. We have his ring. I have mine ('86). My son will be attending A&M next fall (top 15% with a 1310SAT) and to get his grandfather's ring made into his own would be outstanding.

I always heard if you sent Balfour a ring to be remade, they couldn't use the gold from that ring on your remake. That'd be a cool program, though, if it exists.

I didn't know about the melt down option - that's awesome - and the bracelet story is very cool too.
