Or the class space. I had two unrelated academic classes in there and two kinesiology classes.

But yeah, the palm trees??? How did those ever get there?

I've heard that they are planning to build an official "Athletics" office building in it's spot.

While I realize many posters are all too glad to see GRW go, it has consistently been praised as one of the best college volleyball venues in the nation. I can't imagine how bad it will be to watch volleyball matches in Reed, and I'm sure they will lose a great deal of fan support because getting to Reed is so much more inconvenient for on-campus dwellers. Furthermore, we are taking our facilities a step down, and this will not only be problematic for volleyball recruits, but for men's and women's basketball recruits who will have to share their facility with the volleyball team (although I'm quite sure basketball will be given priority in situations of conflict). I know the volleyball team hasn't been doing well lately, but again I think this is a huge step backwards in trying to rebuld the program. Having a separate gym for volleyball used to be one of the best attributes our program had, both for bringing in new recruits and for trying to attract a new, high-caliber head coach. Imagine trying to bring in Pat Henry by telling him we were going to tear down all the track facilities and then move the entire track program into Kyle field and they could only use the facilities when football said so.

I see what everyone is saying about the structural problems and I also saw in Byrne's WW that the old basketball lockerooms will be remodeled and given to volleyball, which could be an improvement over their current facility, but the actual venue for watching the matches will be quite problematic. Although we will not be the first school to combine arenas for volleyball and basketball, you will notice that all of the high-quality volleyball programs at big schools have separate volleyball facilities, including Texas and Nebraska, who are the class of the Big XII in volleyball.

If we really want to build champions in Volleyball, I think this is clearly a step in the wrong direction and I hope that somewhere down the road volleyball can once again have their own volleyball-specific facility. With the current success of the basketball programs, maybe it won't be too long before the basketball programs outgrow Reed and we need another new basketball gym.

It wont affect recruiting. They all have separate locker rooms, etc. Not to mention the addition of more practice courts.

While I agree, having a separate facility for every sport would be nice, it's not practical. Maybe someday in the future this can happen, but as is....the cost of maintaining GRW was a hindrance in and of itself. This move should provide more money to spend on the program.

It's going to be a huge mess if they tear it down and renovate the MSC at the same time.

My guess:
Stuff from MSC will be relocated to G. Rollie (i.e. offices, SPO, Bookstore etc.)
Renovate MSC
Move back into MSC
G. Rollie is torn down

If you have seen the campus master plan, G. Rollie doesn't existing. Neither does the Pavilion. Just because you went to see Cheap Trick there 30 years ago isn't more important than progress/building efficient buildings in hot spots on campus.

From BB's WW:
quote:
Our volleyball team will be impacted the most as we will be relocating our home to Reed Arena. We will renovate the recently vacated basketball locker rooms and practice gym at Reed for the volleyball team. They will also take over the former basketball athletic training room.

Three teams using the main floor at Reed Arena for games and practices is a scheduling challenge. The class schedules of our athletes are impacted based on how we schedule practice times. Also impacted is the way we schedule early season basketball games, and how the arena schedules non-athletic events. We will become the fifth school in the Big 12 to share the same arena between volleyball and basketball.

It may not affect recruiting if recruits don't notice it, but it will definitely have an effect on the recruits once they get to campus. I realize for people who don't care about volleyball it isn't a big deal, but in the volleyball world sharing a gym with basketball teams is a big negative. If we want to have a volleyball team just to increase the number of football scholarhips available, then so be it, but if we are truly interested in having a volleyball team that can compete at a national level, they need their own facility.

What other sports program has to share a facility with two other varsity sports? Men's and Women's Swimming and Diving share one large facility but techincally swimming and diving have separate pools. Baseball and softball have separate fields. Soccer and football have separate fields. I realize that volleyball is a non-revenue sport, but if you are going to have a program you may as well give it a shot to succeed. Its not like our athletic department is strapped for cash.

For the record, I have no problem with tearing down GRW and giving the volleyball team a new facility separate from Reed on another part of campus where land isn't as valuable. I agree that the spot where it is located is a great location for more classrooms or something that students use on a day to day basis, unlike an athletics gym that is only used once or twice a week for part of the year (at least for the matches, not just for practices). My issue is just with moving the team into Reed and forcing both basketball teams and the volleyball team to share one gym.

In the link you posted, it states that nearly half the teams in our own conference do the same thing.

This is in no way knocking volleyball: There's no way that volleyball can justify the operating cost and overall under-utilization of the land on which GRW sits.

volleyball would not share a gym with basketball, the seasons are not the same, and there are currently at least 2 other gyms in Reed where they can all practice.

1. It's silly to compare softball and baseball, because the dimensions of the fields are so different.

2. Soccer/football is a better comparison. But much less has to be invested to throw up some high school style bleachers around a grass field. In fact, it's probably more cost effective than trying to maintain the field at Kyle with year round stress and lining the field for soccer/moving soccer equipment/bleachers in and out.

While main court time will be a challenge at Reed, you have to also remember that each sport will now have their own separate gym to practice in, additionally to the Reed space. Theoretically, there could be a concert at Reed, and still have volleyball, women's basketball, and men's basketball all practicing in separate dedicated gyms.

Finally, the one thing you are overlooking recruiting wise is that our new locker room facilities in Reed will surely be an upgrade over the ones in G Rollie.

I dont think that the soccer field and football field are the same size, but I may be wrong on that one. And you cant say that we just threw up some bleachers around a grass field, because the soccer complex field is one of, if not the nicest in the country, and I believe it cost over $1 million to make. Its not your run of the mill soccer pitch.
AgGrad99

But it's also grown slowly, and is still a lot less expensive than an arena, built solely for volleyball.

Other schools in different parts of the country have dedicated soccer stadiums that are permanent strictures built into the ground, so I call no way on that.

I am one of those old timers who loved going to BB games and concerts before Yell Practice (whatever happened to that?) There was a real sense of being a part of any game played there. Great memories, but the old girl sounds like she is on her last legs.

What about tearing it down and replacing it with a smaller "arena" (+/- 4000) that could be used for not only volleyball but also events that are too big for the Rudder Theaters and too small for Reed? A&M is missing a lot of events because they do not have an adequate facility that can be used for the intermediate audience and doesn't cost an arm & a leg (like Reed) to open up.

We do have one of the nicest facilities in the nation. Much of that can be credited to the great field we have. Why do you think we host the Championship every other year? A lot of soccer teams play in a track complex area and that Sucks! Our soccer stadium still has some more permanent seating in the works.

put a tall, tall building in its place. cool looking. fill it with classrooms, meeting rooms, athletic offices, i dont care. just put it absolutely adjacent to the northeast entrance of kyle. the important part here is that it has a roof overlooking the field. rent it out to corporations, parties, whoever. imagine bbqing and tapping the keg while getting a good view of the action from above. think the union station rooftop at minute maid park.

I took the turf class where they show you how nice the field/grass is. If only I could have a lawn as nice, though I'd need a $30,000 Toro lawnmower.

Soccer field size is different, but it would probably fit on Kyle with minor modifications.

Even with the great surface we have at the soccer complex, I doubt it would be more cost effective again trying to maintain Kyle playing soccer on it. And because they want a practice field anyway, that may as well be the soccer stadium field. And of course the whole issue of playing in the Fall would be a huge problem.

Can't say my favorite, but definitely an important one.

I honestly would still love to see basketball games in there...or at least one game a year for the heck of it. They didn't call it the Holler House for nothing. Would be like Duke's/Kansas's place
