the Volleyball team is moving out, what does this mean for the future of the building, will they return when the MSC renovations are complete?

It's as good as torn down already, IMHO.

As soon as hoops moved out, that building's days were numbered.

Do you have a link about volleyball moving to Reed?

A few years back I talked to a high up with the Rec that said they are trying to eventually move all operations from G. Rollie/Read, because it's such a money pit to operate. If they can (some issues perhaps with it supporting Kyle I think), I believe they will knock it over eventually.

Maybe it will be the new home to the Fightin Texas Aggie Bowling Team!

Poor Jolly Rollie. Good times camping out in front of it for tickets, and watching us struggle to play the round ball inside it. (And getting stuck serving some VIP dinner in there once as a DV for 2 hours one, and they didn't even FEED us!) It will be missed.

trash it, then make it another memorial to someone.

There are already plans to tear it down. The foundation leaks, the ceiling leaks, and to keep off the mold they have to run the A/C on its lowest setting constantly which, on top of the inherent danger/high cost of upkeep/poor aesthetic of the building's deteriorating structure, costs the athletic department a lot of money they'd rather not part with. In the long-term it isn't salvageable, in the near term it's a money-pit.

The time has come for the wreckin crew to do its thing. GRW has served well. The land where it is located is too valuable and situated not to put it to better use. I've heard it said by those in the know that GRW is the most energy inefficient building on campus. I won't quote the annual cost to heat and cool, because I can't be sure of the number that I heard
a year or two ago; but it was a staggering figure. Any cost/benefit analysis should show that the end should within a five~year (my number) horizion.

The Jolly Rolly is built on stilts, much like many of the older buildings on campus. The humidity from the ground creates an extreme mold problem. This is the reason that it costs so much money to cool the building. BB mentioned that plans were in place to tear it down a couple of years ago. They're probably still looking at their options.

I would be sad to see it go. Played a lot of basketball in the afternoons there...with guys like Jacob Green and Lester Hayes, and sometimes, guys from the basketball team (Rynn Wright, Vernon Smith). Watched Sonny Parker and the Ags beat Arkansas (with Sidney Moncrief) there.

Great place to watch a basketball game from. Will be sad to see it go...sigh...

It also does not comply with certain fire codes about the number of entrances and exits from the seating area. I remember BB mentioning that as another reason it can't be renovated.

That was the greatest place for a basketball game. Loud and you were right on top of the court. Steep climb up to the seats.
In my days the football team would sit under the north goal they were right on the edge of the court. They tormented the other team every game. It was great.

I think G Rollie would make a great museum that could be of interest to the public (and recruits) if it held all of the past elements that have founded our A&M school history.

Build a replica of the first train station, 3D room that makes you feel like you were on the drill field in the early 1900's or Kyle Field in 1926, guide into World War II history, images and relics of Bonfire, history of Elephant Walk, Silver Taps, Aggie Muster in that very building, etc....not just a celebration of successful years in athletics. Stuff that wouldn't take away from the other museums/centers on campus.

Tradition or our history not of interest to recruits that choose other schools? Maybe there is not a big enough memory to take back with them. But something that would be a historical wonder or place of Texas interest.

An architect would have to be very knowledgeable and creative in its design and development.

Forgot about that. My graduation was there also. Michael T. Halbouty spoke. One of the most eloquent well spoken men to ever go through the University.

How about a new classroom tower. A&M keeps growing, so it's either up or out or both.
