I'm pretty sure they've always played Grandioso. I know this because my HS band director was a raider and made us play it.

they've always played it. Where have you been?

You do realize that March Grandioso isn't a Longhorn-exclusive song, don't you?

That song is a Goin' Band standard.

Never let facts or reality get in the way of a Tech-bashing opportunity.

Tech played Grandioso before UT did, FWIW.

Check your history books.

We played March Grandioso well before Texas did.

The tard is right, they did play it before t.u. They stole the fightsong of Amarillo High School, March Gradioso, which was written for the Golden Sandie Band.

So actually both t.u. and Tceh aspire to be Amarillo High...

I found the above info hard to believe, so I hit Google. A Cougar High website and a Tech website both claim Tech was the first college in Texas to play March Grandioso. An Abilene Christian website says ACU started playing it shortly after its conductor heard the Amarillo High band play it in 1953. And all this time I wondered why Tech would want to copy tu...

yeah we played that at amarillo high. i used to get so mad at tceh for stealing our song. then i found out probably around sophomore year it's pretty standard around the country for high school and college bands to play. my anger subsided considerably but not before i bashed in the windshields of many cars and destroyed the homes of many families.

Nebraska plays it also.

Lots of bands play March Grandioso. Oddly enough, I've never heard anyone play the whole thing. It's much more than the tune you hear on TV.

Loads of high schools play it. I think every band in West Texas probably does. And they all have their own words they made up.

The idea that it was written for Amarillo High seems kinda far-fetched to me, although I can't definitively say that's not the case. In any event, the story I heard of it's migration into Texas came from a friend that was in the tard band. An old director of theirs was an assistant at Nebraska. They played it, so when he came to Tceh several years later, he started playing it. It spread throughout Texas, including t.u., in the subsequent years. So basically, everyone in the state of Texas copies Nebraska. That somehow offends me more than t.u. or tceh copying the other.

whoever wrote it for amarillo high took it to nebraska...only logical explanation. so whoever that guy was owes me all kinds of legal fees for the property destruction i caused years ago due to my anger of it being played anywhere other than AHS.

March Grandioso was written in 1909 by Seitz, a composer of military marches. It wasn't written for any school, much less one in TX.

March Grandioso has been played by Tech probably longer than the sips have played it.

IMO, Tech's band is so much better than the Howdy Doody Orange band, and their excellence with this song proves it.

BTW, every high school played it in the '70's. I don't hear it much anymore, however.

It's a great song.

IIRC, "March Grandioso" is also Odessa Permian's football game/pep rally standard. It's just a great song.

I agree. "Texas Fight" and "The Eyes of Texas" are catchy and well-played, but other than that I've never been just overwhelmed by the Longhorn band. I'd much rather listen to the Goin' Band from Raiderland. The Fightin' Texas Band is in a category all its own, but the Goin' Band has long been one of the best “traditional” college marching bands around. They're a lot of fun to listen to, especially when they're playing one of their many songs with a Spanish, matador-esque flair to them.

To clear the air (I know 1st hand) ---- in 1953 there was a band competition (I believe it was in Enid, OK but we went to many competitions that year and not 100% sure about Enid). We played Grandioso but the judges were not going to allow it because it was not "approved". We played it anyway and the crowd went wild (as wild as band buffs can get)! Amarillo High continued to play it at competitions. In 1957 the Amarillo High School was voted #1 high school band in the nation!

Thanks for that story, DNC.

Interesting stuff, I've heard March Grandioso played by high school and college bands forever, but I had no idea that the song's history ran through Amarillo High. My mom is a Golden Sandstorm and was a member of the band in the mid 1970s, I'll have to ask her about this.

FWIW, I'm told that the first band in the SWC to play March Grandioso was...

Texas A&M.

Many years (decades) ago. I don't know why we stopped, but I suspect t.u.'s adoption of the song had something to do with it.
ElmoAg09
How long do you want to ignore this user?
so, essentially A&M was the first to do everything in the SWC and everyone since then has been copying us?

..right....
