I just finished "Empire of the Summer Moon" and the brief mention of Lamar got me curious to learn more about him. Can any of you recommend a good biography that is an entertaining read of moderate depth (not looking for 700+ pages of dry data)?

The anti-Houston

Not familiar with a good bio of him but his feuds with Houston are covered well in Haley's bio of Houston.

Davis, Lone Star Rising has good insight as well as Brands, Lone Star Nation. Fehrenbach covers him in Lone Star and that is a must read for any real Texan.
