Going through some of my family stuff. Found my great great great uncle's original copy of "Rifle and Light Infantry Tactics" from the Civil War. According to the insert, there's another book around here somewhere that belonged to RE Lee.

Thought it was cool.

I'm assuming your relative is the DH Howell. Any other details on the relative? Regiment? Etc….

My relative is Major John Y Rankin.

I've got some stuff on him at home I'll look up.

Off the top of my head though:
Captured at Arkansas Post. Exchanged. Captured somewhere again, exchanged. Then I think was on the staff of Kirby Smith at war's end.
