P51 flying over round rock yesterday

I was doing some yard work when I had the surprise of a p51 fly right over my house. I've never seen one in flight.

It was absolutely glorious, in sound and sight.

I've seen just about every other american ww2 aircraft in flight but never the p51. To say I was excited is an understatement

Anyone else catch a glimpse? I presume it was flying out of Georgetown.

It was salute to me (and other vets) that the Hutto Schools does each year for Veterans Day. My grandkids go there.

I was.in the UK this summer and saw, and heard, the spitfire and hurricane flying over an RAF airbase.

That was awesome

Someone in the school district has CAF connections because they send one or two planes every year. Last year it was a pair of T-6s. This year a Mustang.

Best part was when he was up on the roof. " Horsepower! P-51 Mustang! Cadillac of the Skies". Bet I have watched that part 100 times. It never gets old!

I guess I am lucky - there is one based in Mt Pleasant and we see it all the time (along with several other vintage craft, including a Corsair).

The Mid America Flight Museum is at the airport in Mount Pleasant. Scott Glover founded it in 2013. Many of the planes are his personal collection and other privately owned warbirds are there as well. They are usually open until the end of November and then they close til April.
They just recently acquired a beautiful P-40 this October called "American Dream"

Had a similar experience a few years ago. Was out watering a new tree and heard a rumble of a multi engine prop plane. Looked up and was quick enough with the phone to get a pic of it.

Don't know. I have been active with the CAF since early 80's. Know some of the guys with MA. Have met Scott but just in passing. We coordinated some things at a little air show/fly in years back.
Didn't he use to be in the pet food business or something?

Yes and still is in the pet food business.

We probably have not met. I casually mentioned the museum as a round about boast, and when you spoke I thought maybe you lived here. I sometimes forget Scott knows everyone in the aviation world

Used to be one would know that the B-29 was FIFI, since it was the only one remaining in flying condition. Now there is DOC, so I wonder which one this one is?

I live close enough to Ellington that every now and again I see an old warbird flying around. Someone at the Pearland Regional has a T6 they fly right over my house. When that baby flys over you can hear the difference between that and the little Cessna prop planes. Usually able to bits and pieces of the WOH Airshow when the planes loop back in.

The OG A6M sticks out like a soar thumb at Airshows. It doesn't get overtaken by P-40's during the Tora, Tora Tora Show

I have watched interviews of Tusgekee Airmen who flew P-51s. You can see the reverence and love for that plane.

I bet I've seen a plane flying that few on this thread, if any, have on their list. The old XC-99 that had 6 piston driven engines with 3 on the backside of each wing. Only 1 was built (pro-type) and in the late 1950's it was stationed at Kelly AFB in San Antonio. My dad worked at Kelly and we lived close to the base. You could hear it take off and when it flew over, the house shook. At the time it was the largest plane in the world.

Yes, the XC-99 was based off the B-36 Peacemaker. Essentially the same rudder and 6 pusher props, wings look to be about the same, but the fuselage is clearly different.

I figured it would have been chopped up for soup cans by now, but according to the net, the XC-99 was at the Kelly annex near Lackland for some time while it was dismantled for its eventual home at Wright-Patt.

It's not on display at the museum there but they do have a beautiful B-36 on display, saw it this past summer. Great museum by the way-- takes all day+
