The 60's produced some wild designs too, though not as prolific as the 50's. The F-4X 'super phantom' program eventually led to 4 ea. RF-4ES aircraft for the Israeli's (by General Dynamics, not the McDD folks), though the original plans were for an armed machine 3 interceptor variant. They flew/operated these until 2004.



It was cancelled in favor of the F-15 (as a political threat) but the mig-29 which was then developed to counter that never really reached its potential.

I visited B24 bases at Rackheath and Seething UK last summer

The English people are doing a great job of keeping the history of those sites

Pretty good history behind the F-16's development/selection (and, tangentially the hornet).
