After the Great Chicago Fire destroyed the main competitor of Schlitz Brewing Co, it became the most popular brand of beer in the USA,
But the company made a series of poor decisions, the main one being the oft repeated mistake that big companies tend to make of thinking that their customers won't notice small changes in product quality.

Schlitz has been resurrected by Pabst, and it might be a better tasting brew now. I might have to try one. I haven't had a sip of Schlitz since the summer of '76 (when I was just slightly underage).

i thought they had changed up cans or something and their beer turned green and that's what screwed them up. My dad was huge schlitz guy, then it seemed like overnight it was miller lite

My very first beer in 1970 was a Schlitz. It was wonderful!

Really crappy beer but price was king back in the day. We stocked up prior to Sergebutt Ball at 89 cents per 6 pack in 1969.

Growing up in the 60's Schlitz was THE beer, hands down. There were two things that changed that. It is my understanding that they changed their recipe and the taste suffered. The second mistake was advertising. For years, their ads centered around the theme 'go for the gusto.' Then they switched to some negative ads with a "you want to take my gusto?" theme. It was very negative and people didn't like it. They never recovered.

About 15 years or so ago they came out with 'original recipe Schlitz,' but it didn't catch on.

You just verified what the video said, except the video included showing the
booger thick ooze that one of their experiments turned the beer into...
I do believe Pabst has revived a good version of Schlitz.

The infamous "Drink Schlitz or I'll Kill You" campaign, as it came to be called. And it only consisted of four ads (but that was more than enough to get under people's skin). The ad company, Leo Burnett & Co., got canned.

That brings back some happy memories. The one and only minor in possession ticket I ever received was from the College Station Cops in late summer 1969. In keeping with the thread, it was a Schlitz Tall Boy. I was already 21 when I saw the judge. I think he fined me 15 bucks.
